In the early '70's I was in college and it was THE Midwest's "spring break destination", our Ft. Lauderdale, as it were. Maybe half a dozen bars, at best, besides the South Padre Hotel...biggest gathering spot at the time. My Dad's cousin owned several of those 10-person per top & bottom rentals, that came with a box of linens/towels, a box of dishes & silverware, and a box of pots & pans....$360/6days ! Kinda doubt they still do THAT bargain !
We would go over the border to Matamoros and stock up on cheap tequila and whiskey, stop by a shrimp boat with a couple of laundry baskets to FILL with fresh caught fatties for $20/basket, stop by a roadside "truck farm" for corn and salad makings...feed all 10 of us fraternity brothers and ALL THE PRETTY GALS we could find, for a great evening of mingling with those Texas Belles from SMU & A&M.... good times on the cheap !

Kinda like the Branson, Mo. area, that I learned fly-fishing from my great-uncle on the White R..... from what I read (70+ bars on SPI !??) I believe I choose to never return to observe the "improvements". It would certainly taint my memories and simply depress me.

As an Eagle's song lyrics say...."Call someplace Paradise....kiss it GOODBYE !"

I live in Brownsville and keep my boat at Port Isabel. An old friend of mine started guiding PI/SPI in the 60's and he said there were less than 40 licensed guides registered. Now, he says, on any given weekend in the summer season there are 300. One wonders how much pressure the coastal waters and the Laguna Madre can tolerate for how long and still produce quality fishing? PadreB and I went surf fishing a few days ago, and we couldn't find a live bait shrimp and we checked a lot of bait shops. I'm sure it will all come crashing down on us one of these days.

My first visit to "Padre" was in '69 with my parents.... not exactly the same "adventure" as my college visits, but even in the 3 years until I made it back, it had grown. Just can't force myself to re-visit and blur those memories...I think that may make me "nostalgic old man" worthy. I'll take that, no prob..... same with Branson, sorry Ozarkians.

Well, the good thing would be that there probably isn't much here that looks like the old days. It's just another beach town now.

Which is why Thomas Wolfe said you can't go home again.

Leave it to Spirit to assess and determine the apropos quote....
Right you are, Chief, right you and Wolfe are.

(Always wanted to be able to look as sharp in a white suit as that Wolfe guy.....hell, I couldn't keep a beige or pale blue one clean, more than a few hours ! In my furniture sales job I tried adamantly to wear lighter colors in the summer, but practicality brought me back to darker colors. Nowadays, I wear white, yellow and pale blue shirts to fish in, get all manner of goo on 'em, and just don't give a ........ Priorities, priorities, love how some are "allowed" to change in my mind. Hehehe)

Oh Boy! I have, but it has been 10 - 12 years. Back then the best place I have found is off the pike between Port Aransas and Aransas Pass on the Southside. There is also a canal So. of Port Aransas, maybe Meyer's Canal, not sure on the name. I have seen people fly fishing in Corpus Christy Bay, but I never did. I hired a guide once and he took us So. of Corpus to fly fish trout, we didn't do much, the guide was about good as nothing. Be careful walking in that muck and make sure you do the stingray shuffle.

I've done it a few times the biggest I caught was a 22" trout. What fly did you use?

I lived and fished on south Padre Island in the 60’s with my high school buddies and we wished we would of been there 30 years earlier when the fishing was really good / grass is always greener on the other side of the fence
