How do I use a reel like this. It does not have a button or anything. How does it cast?
Have you sent a picture of it or can you send a picture.
Andy
I did add an attachment to it but I don’t see it
My granddad had a couple of reels like that, I think. Since there's no picture, it's hard to say. But it's most likely a trolling reel - they weren't made for casting, you just let the line feed out behind the boat. The ones he had did not have a means of freeing the spool for casting, but they had a button to turn the clicker on or off. I guess your drag was your thumb. Those reels were the reason I bought a Mitchell 300 as soon as I had enough of my own money to get one. And why I only started using casting reels about 2 years ago. I've been avoiding them my whole life.
Thanks. I attached a picture

Is there a button or clicker on the side for your reel for your spool?
Have you put any line on it let ? I'm wondering if it has a drag inside the spool that works on tension? Or you use your thumb 👍. Can you look up the reel on Google and see if you can get information where the drag is.
Good luck
Andy
My dad is dead thanks butt hole lmao
Thanks a bunch. There is a twist knob on the sides that have springs but that’s it.

I would use braided line. You might have more control when casting.

I am well Andy. I have several of these types, one my FIL's and two were my granddad's but none of them are Shakespeares. Top of my head I don't remember who made them. And how are you doin?

That is called a direct drive reel. You simply cast and need to learn to control the spool with your thumb. I have a couple of those including the original Zebco I learned on. Drag is in your thumb also on most of those. I've seen years ago, guy's attach a leather pad on the reel to keep from burning their thumb. Looks like I can only find two. That old Zebco that I got new about 1968 and a Shakespheare. Once you get used to them they are fun to fool with!
