Hello - I’m really new to fishing and I wanted to understand a little more on ‘line weight’.
I am planning on purchasing a light spinning outfit with braided line and Fluorcarbon leader, fishing with soft plastics.
If the ‘line weight’ on the rod I choose is ‘6-12lbs’, does this mean I need to purchase braided line that matches this weight or within the weight? And therefore Flurocarbon to match that weight or abit under as well?
I’ve read that the line weight of a braided line and monofilament are different? Does the ‘line weight’ labelled on a rod refer to mono line?
Incredibly confused :(

Line weight refers to the breaking strength of your main line. Since the evolution of new compounds, new materials it is somewhat outdated. Think of it more in terms of the ideal weight of the fish you target. 12 pound test braid has a quite small diameter. If you load your reel with it you will certainly have a lot of line and you might experience some problems when the line is under extreme loads, like when you get hung up on timber, etc. The line will pull down through the coils underneath it. Without loosing any/much distance casting ability you can increase the diameter of your main line up to 20, 30 or even 40 pounds. Leader line does not go on the reel and therefore does not need to be calculated except for the fish you are after.
Sounds like your over thinking it. If your unsure just fill your reel 3/4 capacity unless your fishing with quick runners it will be plenty
I use braid n I've pulled hard enough to straighten hooks n never had my braid dig in. I go as low as 8lb mostly 10 to 15lb. Underfilling spool with affect casting distance n gear ratio. Put whatever you want on it n adjust the drag. You could put 80 lb on it n not break a rod unless you lock drag n really pull a bow in the rod. If you get hung up keep rod straight n pull
