Fly fishing: Is a 9 wt overkill for occasional pond fishing?

Just bought a new 9wt Orvis Recon and hydros reel, however I’m having some buyers remorse with it. I primarily plan to use this as my saltwater setup for redfish and occasional freshwater pond fishing. Should I return it for an 8 or 7 weight?

9wt is pretty heavy, unless you got some big fish in that pond.

A 9 wt is a bit heavy even for red fishing; a 5 wt would be more comfortable and tolerable for small ponds. However, I enjoy practicing with bluegills (and an occasional bass or carp) with my 5 wt. In fact,, before I bought my 8 wt, I actually caught a keeper flounder and red on my 5. If most of your fly fishing is freshwater, you might enjoy overall more using the 5-wt and you'll become more comfortable and skilled, for what it's worth.
