Leaving for a family beach trip tomorrow and was hoping to take me and my wives new yaks on their first trip. We live on the east coast and with that tropical storm they’re predicting wind gusts of 45+ which is making me nervous as it’s my first trip with the yaks. Don’t want get hit with a gnarly crosswind. I have a self installed rhino rack on my Nissan sedan and have J hooks that I will be strapping the yaks to, and will be tying both yaks down with bow and stern lines. Do y’all think this will be good enough, or should I scrap taking the yaks this year? I have no idea how they’ll hold up in the wind. Have never driven with them on my car before. Thanks!

You plan on going out in those winds?
Could be 1st and last trip. 😳
I have a Hobie pro angler, wouldn’t try it in that kind of weather.

Don't worry about tying them down. With those forecasted wind speeds and your lack of kayaking experience leave the boats at home!

I belong to a boating club that won’t let you out at 25mph winds. And those are 21ft center consoles that are ocean worthy.
Going out in a Gale is foolish and irresponsible. Letting your family go out in a gale is just plain abusive. This is not meant as a jab at you. It is just what it is. I am glad you posted this question. It shows you are not to proud to admit you are a beginner. It may have saved you and your wife's life.

Have a blast with the boats when you get home.
