Do you have centrifugal brakes as well?

Which reel do you have? I actually have 3 ways to adjust mine, one under the cover thats 4 pins some have 6 pins(on/off) and 2 outside (actual adjustments)

I have several different brands and they all do pretty good. You need to adjust the brake for each lure weight. I just adjust mine till the lure falls slowly to the ground and when it touches the ground the spool stops. Anything looser than that is a birds nest. Then you need to stop the spool with your thumb the second your lure touches the water when you cast. It takes some learnin but keep after it. Bait casters are my go-to now and have been since I figured them out many years ago. Good luck👍

You're so right Catfish. Any other way is just a birdsnest. It's all about thumb control. It's sad to say but there are pilgrams out there that just can't coordinate & are all thumbs. For those unfortunate pilgrams there are spinning reels.

LOL 😂
I’m a Penn Baitcasting gal myself. Stuck on my vintage reels. 109, 209 for the Wade or bank fishing and the larger for surf and offshore.

If it over runs in the air it's your magnetic brakes, if it over runs when it lands on the water it is the centrifugal brakes. Adjust tension knob for each lure so the bait drops slowly to the ground and when it hits there is no over run. With your magnetic brakes just keep adjusting till no over run in the cast. Now with time and practice you can learn how to use your thumb and as you get better you can back off the magnetics and increase your casting distance. Just make sure that your elbow is staying at your side during the cast or all the adjustments won't do you much good. What I call chicken winging (letting the elbow come up on your cast) will really mess up your casting performance.

Wow! That is quite an achievement. Most people can only use those reels for strait drop pier and boat fishing. I am impressed.

You’re supposed to cast into the water, not the ground. 😂🤣😂🤣
