Can you really not fish a top water frog on a spinning reel?

So I've been slowly building my tackle box and I've been watching videos on top water frogs. Looks like a fun and interesting lure, but everyone I watch and have searched so far pretty much says to only use a frog on a baitcaster with braided line.

Currently I have myself started with a spinning reel with fly to carbon line. Am I really not allowed to to use a frog with this setup, or would it just be difficult? Having trouble finding a solid explanation anywhere.

Uh ohhh, we may both be in trouble as I do this all the time 😉
If you’re catching fish, you’re doing something right!

We are both going to get in trouble because I suggest that you use whatever you want that works for you

Listening to an "expert" who tells you that positivily you cannot use something, such as a frog lure on a spinning rig is blowing smoke! And you are believing it if you go along with that nonsense. Do whatever you feel like doing. If it doesn't work was well for you, then you might stop. But only because you personally found it not to be as suitable as somethign else, no other reason. Just Sayin....RJS

Being one that tends to go against popular belief OFTEN i find what works for me. One suggestion I'd offer. Make sure your rod has enough backbone to pull one out of the slop. Some day you may decide to try a baitcaster. 👍👍🎣🎣

I do not own a baitcaster reel. I own several spinning reels and have had great success with a top water frog. Using a top water frog on a body of water that is still and seeing a bass hit the frog is an awesome experience

I use one quite often. Works great with a spinning reel.

I don’t see why not🤷🏼‍♂️ I’d just use a heavier action rod and possibly a little “beefier” reel...

It is all about a stiffer rod and heavier line as frogs are usually fished in a lot of green junk. With braid and modern rods, spinning gear is fine. I just suggest you go with at least 30# test. You may be catching 2 pound bass, but you will likely often be catching 10# grass with the 2# bass. The bait casting thing is from the dark ages. Can you imagine fishing 30 to 60 pound test line pre braid on a spinning reel, let alone finding a stiff enough spinning rod to pull in all that green.

I have a catfish spinning combo with said specs that doubles for frogging/topwater for bass in the salad.

I agree with papabear... I’d definitely go with either heavy mono or 30-40lb braid... stay away from floro, braid and mono float, floro sinks... this applies to all top water presentations....

I fish a frog on a heaver spinning outfit with no less than 20 lb. braid. Forget the leader bullshit , it's (NOT) necessary. I tie directly to the frog ( with a dura lock snap only, no swivel on it ) and the Bass is coming to the boat or his lips will ! That fish is not going to notice the line what so ever. The pro bass guy's are giving too much lip service to the leader business because they are getting paid to, in a lot of cases it's not necessary. If you worry about the fish seeing your line, take a Magic marker to a couple foot of it above your snap !

A spinning rod will work just as well as any bait casting rig, just as long as the rod has a Heavy action so can get a good fast hook set. Good control is key when fog fishing because you want your frog to move from side to side like a live frog. If your rod is too light, you will miss a lot of fish do to your rod not having the power to set the hook and a light action tip will not give your frog the correct action on the water, but with the correct spinning rod setup you should be just fine.

I’ve done it too. Worked very well. When in doubt, try it ! What’s the worst that can happen?

Usually when using a spinning reel you use lighter line normally 8lbs. If you hook a really big fish or it gets in weeds or grass you have a greater chance of your line breaking. With braid or 14-18lb. mono or flouro you have a better chance of getting it to the boat. So a bait caster is normally recommended.
