So much helpful advice!! Thank you, everyone. Going to go study up on the knots, put the leader on the line and tie a snap swivel to the end of the lead. You all are the best. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

When you learn how to fish the "DROPSHOT TECHNIQUE" fishing will become much more enjoyable for you and you will become more successful....Good stuff.... As a predominately shore angler getting back into fishing, I love how user friendly drop shot is even from the shore. Just one more tool in the box for me to use.

TacticalBassin;

Are you ready to try something different to catch more bass this Fall? Are you tired of the same old drop-shot worm? Its time to discover a new way to fish a finesse swimbait! Drop-shotting small swimbaits is a deadly trick for Fall bass that are feeding on baitfish. If you aren't doing it this Fall, you're missing fish that are ready to be caught.

Tim turns to a non-traditional drop-shot rig for Fall bass. Not only does he use a swimbait instead of a worm, he also prefers to tie his tungsten drop-shot weights to the line instead of using a standard drop-shot weight. He explains that smallmouth and spotted bass will often throw traditional drop-shot weights off the line during the fight but a tied weight will last much longer. This video is full of small details that make a huge difference so pay close attention to what Tim is teaching.

While the actual method is simple, Tim breaks down 3 key applications for the drop-shotted swimbait. He also explains there are two different hooks that work for this technique. The Owner mosquito light is best with higher-end tackle that has been dialed in to absorb the hard runs of big bass. This hook is incredibly sharp but will bend under load if the angler is not experienced with battling big bass. For those with budget tackle that is not as dialed in, or those who simply prefer a heavier wire hook, the Trokar drop-shot hook is a phenomenal option. Below is a breakdown of the baits, hooks, weights, and equipment that Tim recommends for this method.

The baits...
-Keitech 3" Easy Shiner Swimbait:

(Crystal Shad, Tennessee Shad, Silver Flash Minnow)

-Megabass Hazedong 3" Swimbait:

(Tennessee Shad, Shio Kosho, Ghost Shad)

-Damiki Armor Shad Swimbait:

(Pearl Gill, RP Blue Pearl, Tennessee Shad)

The Hooks...

-Owner Mosquito Light (lighter wire) Size 1:

-Trokar Dropshot Hook (Heavier Wire) Size 1:

Hi, Betts !
You like to use snelled spinners as do I - have caught hundreds of trout and dozens of bass with them over the years ! If you've used them for trout, one thing I've noticed is that
rainbows seem to prefer silver, while browns and brookies seem to like
the gold/ brass color better !

Do you spin-fish with a bubble-and-fly
set-up ? If so, the fly you use may determine whether you should use fluoro or mono leader - a nymph
or other 'wet' fly needs to drop and
be fished near the bottom, so fluoro
is called for ! Fishing surface or sub-surface flies should call for a mono leader due to its' bouyancy - it won't drag your fly under as fluoro would !
Hope some of this is helpful for you !

Mornin A! I havenโ€™t advanced to fly fishing yet, but Iโ€™ve always wanted to try it. Iโ€™ll keep all of this in mind! My friend has a sweet trout stream running through his backyard and the tips are much appreciated, especially re: spinner color. Those spinners have been good to me the past few years. My hesitation re: tying lead to braid came from watching videos on knot tying. The ones I saw were so complicated that they put me off. Thanks to other replies here re: crazy Alberto and palomar, I see now that itโ€™s way simpler than I thought it would be. Iโ€™m all set up now and canโ€™t wait to try it out!

I know where you are coming from with that braid to fluro knot. I've tried the fg knot and just can not get it right. So i stay with a 6 turn each uni knot replacing it often when i get home depending on the amount of catches.

Have you looked at the perfection loop knot for the lure end? Works great once you find the bait of the day and you don't have to worry about extra hardware on the line.

Been wanting to switch from mono to braid and I have a couple of questions for you seasoned fisherpeople out there. Can I tie a snap swivel to the end of the braid, so I can easily change my setup? How critical is the fluoro lead, and will snelled hooks on mono be okay? I like to use these, but I want to be able to swap them out for lures etc. Using ML ugly stik with Shimano Sienna 2500, fishing ponds for bass. Any advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you!

Gmorn Betts. I've been using norman speed clips for yrs. Fishing tournaments only difference i ever saw was i could change n fish while the was retying. The vmc clips are what the guys i went striper fishing used. My speed clip was too small to attach to bigger lures. When i got home i liked to swivel idea. So i got the eagle claw swivels put them on speed clips. Very small n doesn't affect lure action at all. I use Palomar knot on everything i throw. I use uni to uni knot to connect two lines. It's the one i learned to tie first n it makes a small knot. I'm not sure how some of the knots ever came about. By the time you're doing tying them your fingers are toi cramped to fish ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. Good luck with whatever you choose. Remember things like this are a personal preference. Get get em girl ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ

I have not looked at that, Bob - thank you! Also, I didnโ€™t think about replacing the lead/general maintenance, so thanks for that too. I love this place. ๐Ÿ˜

Hiya Griz and thank you! I like the snaps cause I canโ€™t see to tie a bunch of knots all day. Always peering under my glasses or squinting over them and everything is still blurry lol. I was imagining myself standing on the bank, trying to follow a YouTube video, missing all the loops, dropping stuff and not being able to find itโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh, and the topic of line weight just sparked another question: will fluoro lead be okay for topwater lures like the jitterbug and hollow bodied frog, or will it cause them to sink? Thank you!

LOL i know what you mean Betts. I have the same problem. The speed clips come in 2szs. I use the small ones. Fishing with senkos or worms not a problem. Fishing with tubes or crankbaits n such very handy. I'll have several tubes rigged ez change. The thing that don't work well on is spinnerbait n buzzbait. No clips work well on them. If you try them let me know how you like them. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ

You're welcome Betts. The eagle claw swivels are very small but strong. Stay in touch. Fush as much as you can with your grandson. My oldest is working n always busy. The youngest is out of school but is dad is so obsessed with with Clay playing baseball he doesn't have time to be a kid. School just ended n he's already in travel ball. Another parent forcing a kid to live THEIR dream. He'll play till school starts. Clay like fishing n kayaks. His dad doesn't fish boo LOL. Live love laugh they need to add fish to that. ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

Don't know as it would drag them down, but it may hinder the action !
Like the flies, I prefer floating line
for topwater and sinking line for
sub-surface lures ! Others may
differ, but that's just my preference/ opinion !

Regarding flies - haven't had a lot of experience with fluorocarbon, as I prefer mono for most applications, but the 'bubble and fly' set-up has
caught more than a few nice trout
and some decent smallmouths
(two of them in the 3-lb. range,
about 5 minutes apart) ! You don't need a lot of flies - the basics
I stick to are wooly-buggers and muddler minnows - both work well
(for me) ! I also keep a selection of
small frog 'poppers' and flies tied to look like baby mice for topwater
bass fishing ! Hope this helps some -
good luck and tight lines !

Thatโ€™s too bad about Clay - do you ever get to take him fishing? I took Liam out again yesterday. The action was slow, so he mostly waded around in the pond catching minnows and tadpoles while I fished. As soon as as I caught something, his interest went way up, he grabbed his pole again and bam, landed a nice little bass. Weโ€™re lucky in that even though my son and his mom arenโ€™t together any more, theyโ€™re best friends and keep the focus on him rather than themselves. My kids grew up fishing and still love it. Glad theyโ€™re passing it on and that I can be a part of it. Daughter is in Arizona so I donโ€™t get to see her and my other grandkids very often. Going out there next week, so yay! I hope you have some chances to take Clay out and make some good memories with him ๐Ÿ˜ Have a great day, Griz.

Good choices on those flies A. Those are a couple of my favorites. I'm set up to tie a batch of muddlers on my bench right now.
