Thanks for the salute, Plum. Back when I was farming full time I would get frustrated with breakdowns, prices, weather and the rest of the trials of the profession. Working with livestock, especially hogs took a toll on my body. The farm economic crisis of the 80's was tough. In the 90's hog prices crashed, and I sold out of hogs and had to find part time work. Drove school bus, paratransit and other jobs before I ended up with the Post Office. Advanced to Postmaster of a small town so now farming is my part time gig. I currently farm 500 acres of my own (mostly rented and crop share) and custom farm 350 for a neighbor. I have 9 beef cows, 4 meat goats and a dozen laying hens. Keeps me out of trouble, for the most part.
Farming for me is comparable to fishing for many of you, my escape from people and a chance to connect with nature. Compared to my 8-5, all of the problems I have I can fix, not always the case in the Post Office! Thanks again, Plum for the tribute. I for one take it to heart.

You are most welcome Iowa, may the Lord continue to bless those farm dirt hands.

Oh my goodness, I can't imagine the racket!! Or picking eggs from 20,000 fowl. Hats off to ya Grizz!

LOL thanks Kandy. It was loud n dusty. The ammonia coming from the waste was bad. I started wearing a very good respirator mask. The location was nice. 27 acers nice size pond behind house. Stocked with some nice bass cats n bluegill that weighed over 1lb. Had a huge garden nice yard nice woods to hunt deer and squirrel. Back off the beaten path for sure. Friends n family would come for the wkn n bring tents. We all drank beer then so we'd get a 1/4 keg n lite the bond fire n get the grills going. Had a 3wheeler before 4 wheelers got popular. Everybody except the smallest rode it around. We had a blast. Nobody left drunk. πŸ˜ŒπŸ˜…πŸ˜…

I really do appreciate what farmers do. The work never ends, the problems never go away. I grew up between a chicken farm and a dairy farm, both family owned. We grew pretty much all the veggies that we ate all year round. When my Dad got out of the army and WWII he bought a book called 5 Acres and Independence. Told about how you could live on your own on five acres of ground. He bought ten acres, split it with his Dad and thats exactly what we did. Never got into the animals other than growing some chickens, but the milk came from the Hinchmans down the road and the eggs came from the Sanders around the corner. Iowa, Dad started out as a mail carrier in 1948. then went inside as a clerk and ended up as postmaster for about 15 years. When he retired he had 3 years of sick time and annual leave time added onto his thirty years of service.

Fly, 30 years is a long time with the Postal Service! Most get out at 20. Unfortunately I only have 7 years of creditable time (part time doesn't count) and my retirement wouldn't be enough to cover my lavish lifestyle

Wont happen here either. Only thing that belongs in a burger is real meat. Only vegetable that my burger will be mixed with is a slice of tomato on top. Lettuce? Most likely not. That's for the rabbits, the other dark meat.

Same here - no fake meat allowed, EVER ! Like my burger with a slice
of American cheese, a thin slice
of red onion, a dab of ketchup, salt and pepper ! No rabbit food !
