Fishing lure that skims along the surface of the water?

New to fishing. Been testing out various baits like rooster tails and various spinners to some success. A few years back in my area we had one of those huge cicada broods hatch and those cicadas made the best fishing bait I’ve ever used. Big enough that even with a hook they’d still plop onto the surface of the water and flap their wings. Could hardly get them in the water fast enough catching fish after fish.

The fish really seemed to like going after something floating and flapping at the surface. Wanted to know if there was a fake bait that would do something similar.

Google "Yappa Bug "
It's kinda like a Jitterbug but has wings.

That's the closest I've ever seen Kandy. I would think it should work if that's what they are feeding on.

Lot of companies this year came out with their Jitterbug type Cicada lures you can even purchase blanks at places like Barrows Tackle , Jan's Netcraft and Lure Parts .com if you want to customize your own

That looks like a good one, Fred! Have you used it? Ponds around here are full of top weeds. I wonder if the wings would get hung up or if it’d go across like a poppin frog?

I haven't tried it yet Betts, but keep the rod tip up and it should go through weeds.

The new rubber weedless frogs and other similar lures that are hollow bodied can be fished the same way with no hangup being vertically weedlesd

Anytime Betts, that goes for all Weedless Frog type lures too. The lures will make it through the weeds, but often your line will get under them, especially Lilly Pad type weeds. If you keep your tip up at like a 2 O'clock angle, it will keep your line above the weeds.

If you are into weeds try a hollow bodied frog. No weeds try a hula popper. Have fun.
