Fishing Taneycomo or Bull Shoals in the Branson, MO area

I am a kyack fisherman who fishes Taneycomo and Bull Shoals at Branson, MO, on a weekly basis. I do not have a fish finder on my kyack. I mainly fish for largemouth bass but am also interested in Crappie or even panfish. This question does not concern Taneycomo trout. Many of my fishing excursions end with my being skunked. I would really like to regularly catch some fish that I could fry and eat, so I need some advice. I am not a novice angler. I have good equipment and the ability to use it effectively. I hardly ever use live bait, but I am willing if it is deemed necessary. As you know, Bull Shoals is once again terribly flooded ...so how do I catch bass or crappie on Bull Shoals? I can launch into Bull Shoals at K-Dock. How do I go about catching Largemouth Bass on Taneycomo launching either at Rockaway Beach or Powersite Dam. Remember, I am a kyack fisherman without electronics, so the distance I can cover is limited. Any advice from local anglers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Beavertooth

Not sure if that water is clear enough to visually judge depth, but a handy device I use now and then is something I bought years ago for ice fishing. It is a hand held depth gauge about the size of a medium flashlight and runs on a 9 V battery. Also gives surface temp. It's nice to at least know how deep your water is in case you are trolling lures and need to get them down.

Nice picture. I can't be of help to you. Is bull shores near Gastons on the white river? If so make a stop there and do some asking.
Or the marina and seek out other fishermen.
I was only there one time but didn't fish. It was four years back two weeks after another big flood.
Good luck please let me know.

I looked Gastons up on the internet and it is located in Arkansas...I am in Missouri...It is quite a ways away. I have certainly checked with other fishermen...they are all pretty helpful, but most of their help is not really that helpful to me, if you know what I mean. I used to own a 20' Bass Boat that nearly put me in the poor farm...the bass boat changed everything. I could go where I wanted with no effort and I had electronics to help me locate structure and fish. Now I am a kyack fisherman, restricted to fishing pretty close to where I put in the water.

Thank you for responding to my question...that was really kind of you. I will continue to seek out an answer from local marinas and fishermen.

Your very welcome. Yeah a boat can get expensive that's why I don't have one. I wasn't sure about the location of bull shores vs Gastons. I visiting a friend that was moving from mountain grove mo to mena ak. He was showing me all around.
I live in so ca and don't get there too often.

Hey Bfe, he is fishing at the other end of Bull Shoals Lake about 45 or so miles apart but he should be able to talk top any of the locals and get plenty of info but like he said the lake is raising every day. It rained two days ago and they got about an inch and a half and the lake came up almost two more feet.

Hey Bt, your best bet is to talk to some of the folk at the local marinas and also get the weekly fishing reports from Mo. about Taneycomo and get the AGFC app for their weekly report on Bull Shoals.

Hi MAS,
Sounds like another mass flood like the one I seen four years back. It was something I will never forget. I see it take out a massive steel bridge and houses.
Do you mean he's talking about 45 miles from Gastons? A lot of great trout fishing on the white river. I would not want to fly in and land on the grass runway. I fly but not that experience. I was told it's just like landing on ice.

Ya Bfe, he is looking at fishing clear over below Branson. I have been frequenting the Bull Shoals area since 1962 when my grandparents purchased property on the White River about 3 miles down river from Gaston's. They have a great facility there and We enjoyed seeing Him Gaston perform through the years with his acrobatic plane flying and have enjoyed many great meals at the restaurant there. The wife and I will be traveling back to our place there this coming Friday for about a week and a half. Our daughter is vacationing with us and has invited another family that has never been there so that should be fun and we hope to trout fish the river and bass and walleye fish Bull Shoals Lake. Looks like we may even have some nice temps for the week. We are all looking forward to getting away from the rat race especially the daughter and her friend as they are both X-ray techs and have dealt with the covid patients since all this started.

Wow your a lucky man MAS. You know the area well and now have a wonderful family to share it with. I'm happy for you. I been wanting to go there again since the once I been but timing is off.
I fully agree with you on Gastons beauty. The restaurant is really great. I understand fly fishing is a big thing there. I hope you have a great trip and enjoy your daughter and friends. Family I think is all we got so make the best of it.

Are you catching bass on Taneycomo yet? I have place on the water that might help you change areas a bit. Between Rockaway & Ozark Beach. Actually in Rockaway Bayou area.

KH. I also have a place in the Bayou. Bass are pretty nice there. Not sure of the Kayak distance though.

BT, I have a place a bit farther down from Rockaway on the water where you could put in. Bass seem plentiful. Don 580-247-8530
