Shasta fishing

Hi all! I grew up in Orange County Ca so I spent every chance I could fishing off of Huntington Pier, Newport Pier and Surf fishing at Huntington Beach . ( does grunion hunting count as fishing ?)
Moved to the Bay Area 15 yrs ago and have access to Pacifica pier where I caught a huge salmon the first year but it got too crowded so I don’t fish there anymore .
We’ve been renting houseboats at Shasta lake but we aren’t catching any fish . Mainly because we don’t know what to use. Im a “ worm on a hook with a bobber “ kinda gal . My bf tosses in a lure reels it in and changes the lure every single time . Ugh .
Now that you have to use barbless hooks will the live worm even stay on?
Should I even be using live bait or power bait ? Bobber or no bobber ?
Help ! Going out May 17. I can’t let my brother out fish me !! Thx in advance .

I can't tell you athing about Trout fishing there but there is an abundance of smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass in Shasta. What makes fishing difficult there is the crystal clear water and steep banks that have little cover. Why? Well a bass has eyes that are sensitive to sunlight. They are only up shallow feeding early in the am or pm. The majority of the day they hang out in deep water. Most fisherman new to Shasta will use teaditional methods casting at the bank with their boat pisitioned about where they should casting. So back off the bank and fish deeper or put your boat in shallow and cast in deep water working your lure towards the bank. This a great technique at Shasta.
You have to follow the clear water principles of small line that's not visible to the fish. All the finesse fishing techiques are the best way to fish Shasta. This is the time of year two folks in a boat can catch 50 fish total for a day. Most will be small but there will be enough 2 lb spots to keep you smiling all day. Oh. If you like to fish with a jig you must downsize to a mucro or finesse style. Good luck!

You could try drop shotting a senko type worm very slowly, or Ned rigging or Neko rigging either down the drop off, or up the bank from deep to shallow? Look those up and give them a try. Good luck!

Or if you want to use a bobber use a slip bobber and just fish deeper water with a worm or minnow 👍
