Fishing in Tampa Bay

Hi there. My name is Fred and I have been fishing everywhere I have lived in the last 65 years, including fishing for 35 years on the Lake Ontario tributaries in the Pulaski, NY area.
I am now a snow bird and have been wade fishing in the Tampa Bay Area from Ruskin to Ft Desoto ( very depressing that they now have been hit by the red tide). I am interested in sharing information, particularly good spots to fish here. I would also be glad to finding new fishing buddies.
Thanks
(Fishin) Fred

Fred,
My name is Chief Sz, I fish the Causeway in Dunedin. The Causeway is the one that goes to Honeymoon Island.
Gushing was on the poor side last year because Irma blew the water out of St Johns Bay, greatly disturbing the fishery.
I fish there four or five days a week. Will be there at the end of year. I'm from the Binghamton area.

Fred,
It sounds as though you are busy. Steelhead in Pulaski, my favorite time used to be in January and February, only real fishermen were on the water........those days are over. In Florida first of the year, back to NY in June.
I would like to get together and fish........have you had any luck on the Skyway piers.....
Stay warm,
Chief Sz

Not this fall trip, red tide is there. But in the past I have caught some nice fish in the rest area on the north side of skyway piers. I lived in Pulaski for four years and the Syracuse area for another eleven, so I fished there all year, fly fishing the west branch of the Delaware in the summer. Where did you live in NY?

Didn't fish there for the first time in ten years. Lots of good memories there, but spent time in CT (Farmington River) and Florida (Tampa Bay)...

I'm a first-time Dunedin snowbird looking for fresh water fly fishing and tenkara fishing locations in Dunedin/Clearwater. Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

The only time I have fished fresh water was at Tarpon Lake. I rented a kayak and went to catch some bass. I had a 5 foot gator following me for an hour. It's a different perspective in a kayak. Took kayak back mentioned to the rental guy about the gator. He said people from boats fed the gator marshmallows ....I never went back.
Tenkara fishing would be fun for salt water fish, trout and mackerel come to mind....I will be in Dunedin 28th of Dec...

Hi Fred,
My name is Frank and I moved here to the New Port Richey area back in 2007 from Kansas but was raised til 21 in NJ. Learning to fish here in the Gulf has been a unique experience. I am writing to tell you and other folks who read this message about a fishing club I belong to, Fish On Club based in New Port Richey. The majority of members are retired but we do have members as young as 25. The club has around 100 members, many of who fish together. Each month there is a guest speaker, usually a Captain or fishing related professional that gives information about fishing in this area. The dues are a low $35 a year and there are social events for spouses and family to attend. If you are looking to find other fisherman and information in the area check out the website and come to a meeting: https://fishonclub.us . Also while most the Gulf coast south of Dunedin was hit with the red tide the area from Howard Park north has been spared so far. Great mackerel fishing at the moment but the cold wave slowed it down as of yesterday.

Sounds good, I will check it out when I get back to Florida. I am in CT for the Holidays and catching freshwater trout and salmon.
