Virginia Fishing
My choice would be a medium 6.5 to7 ft rod, spin or casting. Smaller rapalas, any soft plastic that mimics crayfish, Look for rocky out crops, have at it!!! Carl.

Says you live in Avon, NC, which is quite a hike from the James or any smallmouth.
If you do get near em though, light spinning tackle be great, throwing little plugs or jigs. Smallmouths love crayfish.
6482bodean, I live on the Eastern Shore of VA in Cape Charles. I have never heard of Cautog.. You might be referring to Tautog. Tautog is some of the best fish you will ever eat next to Tuna or Mahi-Mahi. My wife is all abut Flounder. The bite has been slow because of the weather and water conditions. Seabass is ok. Our biggest bite has been on Black Drum. Drumfish is a real good eat as well. I would check into the Shark thing before you try to land one. The Chesapeake Bay is a breading ground for all types of Sharks. Most of which are protected. If you land one that is not legal it could cost you quite a bit in fines. Just come on and enjoy your time.. Just remember to keep your rod tip up and FISH HARD.

So how did you do? Did you find them trout?
Not yet, seeing more of my doctor than water, need to get there!
There is also a small neighborhood called Tautog

For Smallmouth on the James and it's tributaries above the Fall line I use a Fenwick HMG 6'9" med light spinning rod, Shimano Sedona 2500 reel, 10lb braid, about 3' of 8# clear Stren mono leader, 1/8oz or so jig head, Strike King Rage Tail 3" Baby Craw and float the river in a SOT kayak. A 5wt fly rod and #6 popping bug can be good too.

Any? Lots; James River, Roanoke, Lake Gaston, Kerr Lake, Staunton River, Dan River, and plenty others but word will tell you these have some the biggest. The 5-10 lb’ers taste better though
Agreed with the taste comment. I'm looking for the 20+ guys.

I just looked at your welcome msg. Now, seeing you’re up there (Lake of ….) I’d imagine James River be your closest one for BiG cats. It’s a little bit more of a ride, but Kerr and the rivers in/out of her (especially in) have the really big ones.
Thanks I'll have to check them out.
Tautog is the most delicious fish that I’ve ever eaten. Sea Bass is absolutely fantastic, as well. I haven’t tried the shark, yet. You’re in for a treat, if you can bag em!
