I prefer 6lb test. SOS line from crappie magnet.com with a 18" floracarbon leader in
4lb test for jigs or a single hook gold Eagle
Claw 1/0 crappie hook . I also put a loop Knott
On all my jigs for a more active presentation
along with a slight upward bend on the hook
for easier hook set . You may hang up more
In heavy cover but it will increase your
ability to set the hook when they are biting
soft = more fish for tournament or table !
Hope that helps, Good luck and God bless !

Very nice of you to share your many decades of experience. I love to hear old timers talk about their knowledge and experiences. What was your largest ever crappie and where do you primarily fish?

Nice to talk to an expert. I fish on a NC lake where the water took a little longer to warm this year. As a result the fish (including crappie) were hanging around below 30 feet deep. When catching crappie from these depths they often developed Barotrauma with that air bubble stuck in their swim bladder. I carry severl needles in my box and when I catch one of these fish I deflate the bubble before I return the fish to the water. The success rate seems to be very high using this technique which is called fissing. I have been criticized for using this technique but since I am 100% catch and release I believe it is the best technique. Do you have an opinion?
