Will my braid line work?

I purchased a new spinning reel for my rod today and had it wound with 20# braid. When I got home and went to mount it on my rod, I found it was a Med/Fast graphite/fiberglass rated for 10-17# line and 3/8-3/4oz. lures. If I go ahead and put the reel w/20# braid on this rod what will be the down side? And will it affect the size of lure? Or should I just reload the reel with 15# braid. I'm fishing an area of low current for Red fish and snook. Thanks.

I think you will lose some distance casting but if you hook a big red drum or snook you will be glad you kept the 20lb. line.

On the contrary, you will actually GAIN casting distance with 20# braid. The reason is that it's the diameter of 6#mono. Even if you went up to 50# braid you would only be at 15# mono diameter.
Just remember that your ROD isn't rated for 20# test and you could feasible break your rod horsing a fish with line heaver than the rod is rated for. However, as long as you don't do that, OR start yanking on it too hard when snagged, you'll be fine.

Just set your drag for around 10# and you'll be fine.

You'll be fine Jimbo, just set your drag correctly. Most rods are not yet rated for braid size. Most are only rated for mono lb test. Some are rated both ways and the braid ratings are roughly 2X the mono rating. My Lightening Rods are like that.
Just remember YOU should never try to free up a snag by arching your rod, no matter what kind of line you use.

The 20 pound braid will work fine on that application. Remember you are going to set the drag for ; leader wt , rod strength, hook strength, etc. anyway.

What everyone said is spot on
Chances are real good your reel don’t have 15 pounds of drag anyway.
20# on a spinning reel works very well

Just be super careful not to get that line wrapped around any part of you or anyone around you. It will act as guillotine wire and cut through any part of you. It does not break!! That’s the point of it and the danger of it!

20# braid will work great, the smaller diameter should cast well. Just set the drag so a big fish can take a little line on A Run, and you should be Golden.

I agree with saw1. Another caution with braid: It's slippery compared to mono or fluoro, ie., it'll slip and untie itself with a clinch knot. Best use a Polomar knot instead.
