That is likely the real reason people don't want you firing up the ice auger or banging on the ice with a spud and any experienced ice fisherman knows you don't get many bites until you are finished banging on the ice no matter what method you use. Tim I think you have nailed it.

Sometimes when you confront somebodies rudeness with kindness it changes their opinion/outlook. IDK.
Course, they could have been drinkin and been real Aholes and said, "Oh, bout a mile."
OR you could have gone over to them and said,"... (show quote)

him cutting off your propane is definitely off the charts. stay away from those people. but i don't like the above commenter brining politics into this. in michigan we have a couple of groups for lake st. clair and the detroit river and we do not permit this. stop it.

A good rule of thumb how far would you want them to be away from you?

Yeah, you're right. Came to fish, not fight. But, sure makes you mad enough to fight.

I have witnessed ice fishing exactly once in my 77 years. My wife and I had attended a business meeting in Aspen Colorado, immediately following a major snowstorm. At the first opportunity we went exploring and observed a number of people ice fishing. We were walking toward the fishermen when my wife noticed that I had disappeared. A large tree had uprooted, leaving a large hole which filled with loose snow. With uncanny precision I had had walked right into the camouflaged stump hole.
