Well that's what I thought when I got it to where I could see it - huh, a squaw fish.

Yeah we came in from Auburn - up "the grade". First we went down Rattlesnake to the peninsula, but would've had to have had my mule with me to fish that place - about a 1/4 mile or so of steep hiking down to the lake, the ramps are all closed and gated off. Too bad, because they've been stocking Folsom, up there by where the river comes in I've taken some fatties in the past. This time of year especially.

As far as eatable, I ain't never et one. They don't make very good catfish bait, neither alive nor cut up. I never had any luck with em. How good can they be if a damned channel cat won't eat one? You'd have to ask the catfish hunter - he catches em for money up where there's a bounty on em. I'll bet he's tried em. I've heard they're boney as hell, but then so are shad and shad are delicious. Huh. Pickled squaw fish. Whaddaya think?

He's not quite dead, I did catch a fish today, but it was not a trout and since I consider myself a trout fisherman, that stripedy bastardo will not be pronounced officially dead until I do catch one. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I set out in pursuit of trout and failed at my mission. BUT. It was a perfect day - low 60's, no wind, kinda cloudy and I had an entire beautiful riverfront park practically all to myself. Said to myself "can this be California"?

So here's a pic of what I caught. I used the jar of power bait for a size reference. Dang these guys can fight. I didn't take a pole holder down to the water, so i's just sittin there with the butt of my rod shoved down my boot to hold, and this guy about jerked the rod into the water.

I know the catfish hunter will recognize this, anyone else? My grand daughter Lorelei caught one about twice this size last spring on the Feather.

And this one had been eating well, definitely chunky for the size of it.

Way to go buddy. I knew you could do it.
I normally click on the “morning post “ first but the title of your post caught my eye and I had to see what you caught. Good job.
I know that stretch of river. Real pretty up there.

That's a perfectly fine name for them in my opinion Steve. But NOOOOO. We had to change the name to pike minnow so as not to offend anyone's tender sensibilities. I've done a little looking into this topic in particular, and can anyone out there please tell me how or why the word squaw is offensive? Mrs Spirit tells me that it is a Native American term for the female pudendum. (here I come attic). I guess kinda like calling your boss a c**t. But she can't back that up with any evidence. Which aboriginals and which language? Anyone?
Now I'm really not looking to get put in the attic, so let's not talk about whether it's right or wrong to go renaming fish for those reasons, but in my opinion if you're gonna do that ( I'm ok with it ) you should be able to back up your argument with little proof. My opinion.

I have heard similar. Besides changing the fish name the US Geological Survey, the ones in charge of maps, changed the name of many streams, lakes, mountain peaks etc with reference to sqaw and even papoose. Did this in Montana many years ago. Do you have any idea how many Sqaw creeks or Sqaw peaks there were?
Idaho did something similar at least the part that I frequent, changed the name to the native Neemeepoo language of the Nez Perce people.

Thanks bric. We still have Squaw Valley here in the Sierras and I've never heard much about changing its name. Maybe they're afraid of loss of revenue?

Not a great picture angle on the fish, and I'm told there are no walleye in California, but with that lighter color on the bottom of the tail fin I'd be taking a second look.

Yes is is, the South Fork, just west of Coloma. Nice little park there, right off the road. I guess the folks who live there don't realize what a little gem they have right in their side yard. Wasn't hardly a soul there.

My wife and I catch crawdads under the bridge in the spring and summer. I take a pole and some crawlers down sometimes and caught two nice trout that were cruising within five feet of the shore where it's about five feet deep. Trout and crawdad dinner...when the little restaurant was on the corner we would eat calamari appetizers with a nice bottle of wine. We live about 20 minutes from there in the town of El Dorado.
