You're kinda looking for 1 answer to 2 different questions. In a boat, 7footers work well and allow multiple people room to fish. From the shore, an 8-10 footer will allow much longer casts, and get your bait/lure into deeper water.

If you want what I think are really great rods look on eBay at GLoomis sometime you can find one for under 200 and the other one I fish with 7 footer two pieces is st croix there in my opinion both very good rods my loomis is one piece 7.5 foot love that rod
