Getting Back in to Fishing on the Texas Coast...

I am finally getting back into fishing after about a 15-year hiatus. Starting to fish the areas south of the JFK causeway (between JFK and Baffin Bay) in Corpus Christi. I was looking for some good maps of the bays that provide depth/bathymetry info, mostly to keep me from running aground. I was hopeful that by now (2021) that "there would be an App for that" to get that type of info on my phone, but I haven't found any solid info online. I have a GPS on my "new" used boat and I am starting to learn that unit as well. Looking for any input from the group on good Apps for maps. We're mostly fishing for trouts and reds FYI, but with young kids we'll be happy to catch most anything on some days...

swjecker: Welcome to the Forum. I am not a good source for maps or such. I would suggest you can run full bore in the intercoastal canal. When you choose to veer off, take it easy and pay close attention to your GPS which whould also provide depth readings. I don't know much about oyster reefs in your area, but they are always a hazard, too. It is a good idea to carry a spare prop. You might pick up a used one, or one that's been bent and repaired for a back up. Just Sayin...RJS

Welcome to the Forum, swjecker, I found one for South Padre Island online but I can't remember where. I looked at it thought that would be good to know. But, that is as far as it went. If I figure it out, I'll let you know. The thing that bothered me was the fluctuation of the tides.

Well, regarding the tides, I had a Garmin that internalized the tides and predicted them. I do not remember if that has harmonized so you would know that say at high tide the water would be just how deep over a oyster reef, or not. You might have to figure that for yourself, and not venture into skinny water on a low tide. Just Sayin...RJS
