Hello fellow fish heads. I just recently moved to the Charleston area from New Mexico to be near my daughter and granddaughter so my fishing experience is mainly with rainbow trout in the mountains of Southern NM. I'm interested in learning new techniques to catch speckled trout, redfish, and flounder. I caught some when it was warmer using mullet and shrimp from my castnet but now it's cold and that's not an option.

Soist: I suspect you can get some bait at the local bait stands. Have you tried any of those? The alternative is to use lures. For that, I would also check local bait shops for what they are selling. Just Sayin...RJS

Thanks RJS. I've been trying to avoid people as much as possible so I haven't gone to the bait shops. I have a pretty good selection of plastics and top waters and my brother in Brazoria has given me a lot of advice but it gets a little colder here so I'm wondering if there's any special techniques or lures for this area. I've tried slowing things way down but haven't had much luck.

The biggest difference is to slow everything down. Fish metabolism slows, they don't move or react as fast and they don't need food as often. Slow jigging spoons like Hopkins shorties in gold will sometimes hook up with red drum as an example.

Welcome to Charleston Soist. The Trout and Reds are out there. I am only fishing for Reds now using frozen shrimp on a red jig head. I see people in the same area as me catching trout on grubs of different colors. They say the color changes from day to day. I dont target flounder. Only catch them when im fishing for something else. Where are you fishing ig you dont mind me asking. I hope this helps

Thanks Gordon. I've been fishing from shore mostly on the Stono River and Folly Beach. I caught a few at both places when it was warmer and I could net live shrimp and mullet but almost none now. I wanted to get a boat but the Covid has made me avoid human contact and I was considering a kayak but I'm 6'9" and 270 lbs so don't know if that's an option. I'm a retired high school math teacher so I have unlimited fishing time. I'll try the frozen shrimp red jig head. Thanks so much for the advice!

If you go on to Folly Beach to the light, turn left and go o the end of the road. That's an old Coast Guard station that had a Loran tower on it. GPS put them out of business. LOL. Walk the beach to the rocks and try there. Should be able to avoid human contact.

That's where I go. Near the lighthouse. Does anyone sell live mullet and/or shrimp at this time of year? If so I might throw on a mask and run in real quick. But first I'll try your other suggestions. I just bought a jar of those Gulp Alive shrimp in liquid for $20 that I'll try too.

Check with Haddrell's 843) 573-3474 or Crosby's (843) 795-4049. There on the way. Only places I know.

I moved down here (Pawleys Island) 15 years ago after fishing the Lake Erie and Detroit river for 50 years. There is
a bunch of stuff to learn in salt water. I joined a fishing club and in a short time I learned a lot. There are a
couple clubs in your area also the internet is full of videos with helpful information. Log on to the Salt Strong club
and get their tips on line they are the very best. Good luck.
