Mountain Stream Setup.

Hello all and thanks in advance for any help or advice offered. I live in the Adirondack mountains, and have just gotten into fly fishing over the last few years. I presently have a 9’ 5wt Orvis Encounter that I’ve been using since I started, and while it is a bit stiff it is still fun to use and practice with(and occasionally have my dad laugh his butt off as I snag the occasional branch).

However, I had a day off this week and was bored, so I wanted to see what the smallest length fly rod I could find was, and I was surprised to find the Cabela CRG fiberglass rod, 5’9” 3wt. I ordered it for fun, and the fact that I was going to otherwise order a 7’6” rod costing much more than I’m willing to spend.

The goal I have is to fish small, narrow mountain streams that won’t permit overhand style casting, and will require a bit of finesse to hit the sweet hiding spots next to boulders. What type of line should I use if I want to try my hand at nymphing? Leader/tippet? These streams have been my stomping grounds for years with modern tackle, and I know the brook trout in these spots are going to strike a target halfway to the bottom more than something floating the surface. The average distance will be between 15-20 feet for a cast, sometimes shorter depending what angle I use to hit a certain pool. Like I said, it’s a small narrow set of streams that won’t require much to get the job done, I would just like to know what kind of lines I will need for nymphing. Thank you!

Col... sounds like you need a nice stiff fly flipping rod. Try a 3ft 7wt from Fly Pro Shop. Go to youtube channel TacticalTrouting and watch the video where Willie Nelson demonstrates the underhand fly flipoing cast. Try a 1/32 oz flipping fly with a helagromite trailer to get in the strike zone. Good luck and don't forget to post pics.

Have you considered Tenkara? The type fishing you're talking about is exactly what it was designed for - like hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Do some surfing around and check it out. Plenty of videos out there.

Col.... 1000 apologies! My phone died so I forgot about you. I meant to follow up with this
Hopefully it is obvious to you that I know nothing about fly fishing. But if you know anything about bass fishing then you will be able to find the humor in my post. And if you don't (unless you are to young) the visualization of a stoned Willie Nelson fly fishing with an underhand technique in and of itself is worth by the price of admission.
