Reel question

Can a Shimano Sienna 1000 reel be used for saltwater fishing? If so, what maintenance should be undertaken afterwards to keep it in good condition? And does rod type matter for (onshore) ocean fishing? I plan to use my freshwater rod (my only available one atm), but want to make sure this won’t damage it. Thanks!

After a day in salt my rod and reel and I get a long hot shower together.
It works for me.

Seems to me that's a pretty small reel for salt water. Don't care what rod, don't go after anything over 4-5 pounds.

The 1000 is to small for the heavier line needed in saltwater
I would go to a bigger size reel.

I use both a shimano 1000 and a 2500 down the Keys for onshore fishing (8# braid fluoro leader) biggest catch was a small shark (about 15#) more fun on this light gear.

Are you fishing with just this one rig, or do you have several? Yes, you can use it even if it isn't ideal. There may be better choices, as seen by the prior posts.

Remember, if a giant spools you, there are always wonderful stories you may tell afterwards. Just Sayin..RJS

In salt water the smallest I use is 2500 and I've had a couple of close calls.

You never said what you were fishing for. That would make a difference. Also your skill level (no offense). I’ve used small reels like the 1000 series fishing for perch, etc. I’ve also used it for schoolie sized stripers. It all depends on you.
