It's been almost 2 years since I've been to southwest Florida due to covid. I'm biting the bullet and flying down mid February. The house is on a channel leading to Charlotte Harbor. I'm not experienced in salt water fishing. I spent my life fishing lakes in northern states. What fish are in season or can I hope to catch? What kinds of lures might work? Should I use live bait? How do I use the live bait? Need some help and luck

If you haven’t been there for two years, just asking , did you go there before?
If you turn off the news and go to stand alone grocery stores, you won’t even know they have Covid in Charlottecounty
Also— in case you didn’t get the memo. Fishin Franks. Is gone. Google it. Amazing. Truck flipped over, landed on the roof, burned the place to the ground. Where to go get bait???Bait shop??? There’s one south of punta gorda

I got here mid December, From IN, there is a bait shop across the bridge in Punta, called lashley' they have live shrimp. Are you bringing boat? You will not get to keep any fish. Red tide. Catch and release any thing you want. But have a ball.

Randy56 - How long has that red tide been a problem this time? An annual event? I experienced it a few years back and the smell would run us off the beach and mess with our heads. My head was messed up enough already. Left early.

About a couple weeks ago we went to Ft Meyers beach. There was dead (small) fish washing up on shore. There was a Fishing tournament last week end. In Punta Gorda. No one was allowed to keep fish, or bring them into weigh in. Take pic, only. i have a friend that was in the contest. He said do not eat the fish. New here, I think it is an annual event.
The local news said, the smell at the beach, could cause respiratory problems.

A good way to scout a new salt water area from the shore, wading or in small boats is casting a 3/8 oz gold KastMaster spoon. It's old school but catches a wide variety of fish on light tackle. In SW Florida, I'd look for snappers, jacks, barracuda, grunts, porgies and maybe a small snook or two. Once you've found what fish are in residence and biting, you can refine your lure selection. Of course, hiring a guide is another great way for a quick learn, but he might take you to areas that are harder to access.

Oh my, I have been to Fishin Franks a couple times but had not heard about it burning down. A shame, a local landmark. My neighbor tells me not much covid in Charlotte county. Thanks for the updates.

The news story said a pickup was on 41 southbound going approx 100mph at 2AM, wipedout on curb, rolled, bounced , airborne, landed inverted on top of fishin franks store. Then caught fire, then the whole place caught fire

Didn’t see the news, went there for bait one day and was like ??? Huh??? Must have passed it. Did pass it. Drove by again, was like ????huh???? Well let’s see. There the circle k. There’s the Walgreens. It’s.....GONE!!!

@mistred64 Like you I'm a snow bird, renting on a canal parallel to Edgewater. that's how I found this site. Frustrated, not catching anything.I have not had any luck fishing in these canals. There is a pier under 41 on Port Charlotte side. I've seen people catching fish there. Going home March 15. if I find any spots to fish I'll report back.

If you enjoy crappie fishing, i got the fish for you in Florida. Sand perch! They are so much fun to catch on light tackle. I use 8 lb. Test, # 8 gold long shank hook and a 3/4 oz. Slide sinker. For bait i use frozen shrimp. The secret to catching them is peel the shrimp and cut it into 3 or 4 pcs. Happy fishing. O by the way i fish in stuart florida.

Thanks Randy 56. I'm not really a snowbird as my wife and I go there for a few weeks thruout the year, basically when airfare is cheep and our jobs let us. Basically I float in the pool and drink all afternoon while my wife takes her mom shopping. :-) I would like to spend more time fishing off the dock if I knew I had a chance to catch something.
