I’m just starting getting into fishing and was wondering how to determine what type of bait to use both artificial and live. I’ve only have been fishing in fresh water; mainly for rainbow trout and catfish in a stocked pond. 3 trips and still no fish.

I am not a cat fisherman, but I have read they love chicken livers, hot dogs and small bluegills, but check the pond regulations. As for trout, worms and Powerbait, but I have also caught them on kernels of corn. I hope at least some of this helps. Good luck!

Morning Sally, trout also like spinners like rooster tails and panther martins, try different ones till you find what they are biting on, they also like Phoebe spoons, give'em both a try

Good morning Sally, try different baits, live worms, chicken liver and there's plenty of lures fish will eat, try a few different kinds, not expensive ones though. What I catch most of my bass on cost less than $1 each. Good luck

Two completely different types of fish in that pond but if it is truely stocked with both species you should have a good year but the two fish like completely different food. Catfish will eat anything but try live bait first for both species. Crawlers of worms. Small minnows like shiners will catch catfish but so will almost anything else. For trout I would stick to small spinners with different arrangements of feathers.

Welcome to the Stage Sally. For catfish try some stink bait found at most sporting goods and fishing stores, or some chicken livers using a treble hook so it will stay on better. For the Rainbows I’ve been told by FS members to use small colored marshmallows by tying a leader and a hook about 18” up your main line, with a small weight on the tag line. PLEASE do not use whole kernal corn on trout or other fish.they cannot digest it and it will kill them.however berkley? I think? Makes a artificial corn bait that is easier to put on a hook,has better fish attracting scent and outfish the real corn,much safer!
Catfish rely on scent,chicken liver ,fresh shimp,are good.doctor with garlic powder,anise,strong smells! I like baitmate garlic and anise gel.sticks good on bait and good bites.goodfishing to you

i use green night crawlers here in ohio i catch alot of blue cat and channel cat i put 2 or 3 on my hook depending on the size of your hook,put them on and let a part of the worm danggle. another thing i do is wash my hands in the mud and sand to get rid of the human smell...dont use any perfumes or cologne, deodarants your fishing not on a date and most of all you have to be paient,you might go one time for 5 or 6 hours and slay the fish,next time you go you wont even get a bite.. fish are like us if they aint hungery they dont eat....chicken liver..(stinkier the better)...i like to dry my liver in the sun till it gets kind of dry on the outside and stinky on the inside..it helps it stay on the hook better or you can use cheese cloth to wrap your liver in.well i hope this helps some one out there,works for me.
