A lot depends on the type of fish and how it is hooked.

Wrap a towel around it. You get a better grip

I'm with Scoot. I usually have a pair of needle nose pliers on a belt holster. If I'm gonna release it I'm careful not to damage the fish. The best practice means catching more fish. Let's go.

Ya have to control the fish. Don’t let it startle you. Get control and use your pliers to extract the hook.
Allowing the fish to do what it wants isn’t good for the fish , it can get a hook in you.

Maybe one of those fish grippers would help you out.

Needle nose for sure. Clean em up, especially after salt water. Crushing your hook’s barb might make it easier for you. And I’ve not tried the grippers, but I bet they help.

I’ve got that exact pair and they work great along with a pair of forceps....🐟on

You can also use those brown jersy gloves to get a better grip on the fish. I haven't tried the gloves with the plastic dots, they should work also. A hand towel helps also. If the fish has teeth you will definitely need a pair of needle nose pliars. Keep fishing. DEEJAY

I try to keep my hands wet when holding a fish and try not to remove any more slime on the fish than what's going to happen. Not sure if the ones who use rags and gloves keep the wet for the same reason, not wiping the fish's slime off. The slime protects them while in the water. I can always rinse my hands in the water.

Excellent point, glad you brought it up. The slime is there for a reason.
