When it comes to big flatheads I use a penn 209 and 309. They are very dependable and smooth casting.

I use a shimano Tranx 200 for deep crankbaits. These are heavy duty rated reels
Also the Lews Super duty. They are very strong reels.

I use the Abu Garcia Ambassador 7000C for catfish below the dams. I have aftermarket bearings installed & carbon fiber drag. For striper below the dams I'll use Ambassador 5500 or 6500.

Lews superduty. I have three. They are fairly lightweight, have a good bearing count, external adjustments, high line capacity and reasonably priced. I also have after market 130 mm cranking handles with large knobs on mine. Seems to help some.

I have used Abu Garcia Ambassador teels sinse 1960's. Still own all that I've bought, 4600, 4601 5000, 5500,and 5501,the older reels are a little heavy, but all still work as new. I clean them regularly, and the only part I have replaced is a pall. I have tried using low profile reels, never really felt comfortable with them. The Ambassador was considered the elite reel when first introduced. It's strong, reliable, some of mine are 50+ years old. I'm probably a little biased but they're what I'm used to. Keep fishing.
