If you're thinking of Montauk State Park in New York,March is kind of cold and windy (heavy). It's kind of early for most saltwater species at that time. You would be wise to either charter a boat or go the party boat route. There are some really good ones in Montauk, headed up by the VIKING fleet. I would Google them and find out their sailing schedules. You won't be doing much catching off the beach at that time of year. Best of luck!!

Hey FT. I have never fished at Montauk but have gone past there hundreds of times traveling to my place on the White River below Bull Shoals dam.
I would suggest picking up a few small lures such as Little Cleo's in silver and or gold, small size Kastmaster's in silver and gold, Thomas Bouyant Spoon in brown trout pattern, or small #2 or #3 Bluefox Vibrax's without hair in silver and gold.
You should also u-tube a three-way rig or as I know it the White River Rig and use a variety of Berkley Power egg colors starting with white, florescent yellow, pink, or orange and then tip it with a wax worms, corn, shrimp, redworm, or a chunk of night crawler.
Good luck and no matter what have fun!!!

There is a Montauk state park in Missouri, down I-44, half way between St. Louis and Springfield, south of Salem, it’s a spring fed trout park.

My answer might count if your grandkids are still minors and especially if you are teaching them to fish. . .if you all take waders, you will have more flexibility. If they are already experienced trout fishermen/women, then you might prefer to fish in area (1) fly water (single hooks with fly. . .don't have to have a fly rod, but artificial bait, live bait, and lures without flies (like little cleos and beetle spins) not allowed; if you use spinning reel, rooster tails are ok), or in area (2) artificial lures and plastic worms and eggs, but not power bait or live bait. Area (3) is anything, and I would say power baits, yellow scented cheese with back-up colors orange and white. . .red salmon eggs. . . live worms (thread on hook to cover it all, don't leave much of a dangle. . .rainbow trout have small mouths and sometimes are very careful when they take a bait), some small live minnows. . .and my secret bait weapon is to buy the cheapest goldfish I can find and have a half-dozen on hand for when they stop hitting. You will be more successful scouting out the hole you want to fish the evening before, and then being there to claim it at least 1/2 hour before. Again if wading, try to get at the head of a hole so you can throw directly into the flow of the stream. On the banks (or even if wading parallel to banks, folks tend to crowd right next to you. Some people love this shoulder to shoulder stuff, such as on opening day March 1st, but not for me. After the first hour, time to wade downstream and find more room. Stray can be found almost anywhere! Enjoy! It's a beautiful part of our Ozarks.

thirdwillie, it sounds like you’re describing the 3 zones at Bennett Spring. Montauk only has 2 zones. Above the dam is fly fishing only and below is anything goes.
There is actually a 3rd zone that doesn’t seem as popular as the other two and that is a flies only, catch and release.
