Smiley210, my first thought is to get with somebody who HAS BEEN fishing before...
Ditto. Too many variables-Starting with hard or soft water, boat or shore, species available. Get help at a LOCAL tackle shop. Don't be afraid to look stupid-everyone has to start somewhere.

Hell I look stupid and I’ve been doing it for 50 years.
Take binoculars so you won't be noticed, and watch successful fishermen
from a distance. Also, always act real dumb when approaching someone
with a good catch returning to the dock, like "What kind of fishes are those?
Did you catch them on a big worm or a little worm?"
You get the idea.

Keep your hook in the water! Very few fish have been caught while casting.
Run , caution, it’s like crack to some people and if you get hooked it will cost you thousands of dollars to feed your habits
