This is a certificate of recognition that I received for my 8 pound 8 ounce Weakfish back in 1974. Sorry but I don’t have a picture of the fish. 😢
What is a Weak fish? Sound like they are not STRONG

Its in the drum family but most people here call it a sea trout. Has a soft (weak) mouth. Congradulation lorafa. Thats a big one.
They’re in the same family as Sand trout, Speckled trout
I think they get their name from the fact that their mouths tear easily. If you set the hook too hard, or fight the fish too hard, there’s a good chance that you’ll tear the hook out.
Thanks Gordon. They don’t grow them like that anymore.

. Just read about the weakfish verses the sand trout. Thats a good artical. I have never heard of a sand trout. Learning every day here.
Well, unless you are observant, you might not even notice the difference in a small speckled trout and a sand trout. Sand trout do not get as big as speckled trout.
A lot of trophy hunters will wade out into shallow bay areas in the late winter, early spring. They are fishing for trophy female Specs who are leaving deep water to find mullet who are also in the shallow flats. These large females can weigh over 10 lbs, and maybe larger!
These fishermen use a top water mullet type lure and are stalking these moster trout in the shallows because the sun had warmed it up and the trout are following the mullet to get a meal.
It is difficult, because often the fisherman must wade in about a foot or so of mud as well as a couple feet of water. And it is usuallyu cold!
GATOR TROUT
When speckled sea trout reach trophy size, they become gator trout. The Florida record speckled sea trout is 17.7-pounds and was captured in Fort Pierce. The Indian River Lagoon is without question the epicenter of trophy class gator trout in the entire country.

That’s a dandy. My PB weakfish is less than two pounds.
Thanks Catfish, but remember that this was from almost 50 years ago. I think today a 2 1/2 pound Weakfish is a really good size.

I guess you’re right. I never caught one till the late 90s.

I like catching sand trout but I don’t like eating them. Their meat is too mushy for me. There is a world of difference between a sand trout and a speckled trout when it comes to flavor but both have soft mouths.

Soft and mushy don’t even make good jerky.

No way they’d make any kind of jerky. I don’t keep them. No use. I don’t eat them. Lots of folks eat them but my wife and I can’t stand them.
