Scent and how much should I use?

Ive heard for a while now that some fishermen would put scent on everything. That they would rub their hands with some attractent/cover scent so that everything they touch gets a bit of scent on it and so that lures always smell at least a bit like scent. Is this worth it? can you over apply scent? does it change on species? Ive heard that berkley trout bait works amazing, and its super strong. So would it help if you were to put just a bit on all your flies? would this ruin their effectiveness? does it actually increase bites? thanks in advance

The only time I have used scent on flies is when I was fishing salmon with a freshwater shrimp, I put some on and I out fished my partner by a long way, but I always did anyway, so that doesn't prove a thing. I do use gulp for walleyes, at times, and that is scented.

I quit using spray on scents years ago. Wasn’t worth the mess for me
I do use soft plastics with built in scent
Gulp , strike king with coffee scent and my favorite Keitech with squid scent cooked in the plastic.

Berkeley power bait, gulp, max scent all seem to have increased with my hook ups with fish. I have however never used a spray or dip in product so I don’t know if I’ve been of any assistance.

I think it will make them hold onto the bait longer.

All you can do is try. I’ve caught fish with it and without. Whiting in the surf. If I had scent with me, I’d use it.
You can’t use too much because it will wash off.

Remember the old Brylcreem commercials? Well a little dab will do ya.

I use the one shown above after not getting any hits. If they hit its scent for the rest of the day.

Plumbob, right on! Brylcreem goes back to the 1920’s, or so Wikipedia says. Slick that hair back like James Dean. Yep, showing some age with that recollection.

I don’t use any scents. I was being out fished by my wife and friends, I got some mud from pond and washed it of with water from the pond. I ended catching my limit before them. They had laughed when they saw me getting the mud.

Most guys down here use Pro-Cure Mullet or Shrimp I think it helps on fish who use scent to hunt like Redfish or Flounder and in fresh water for sure Catfish. Those who hunt by sight I'm not sure. It does help remove any human scent from your hands and that can't hurt. Like a smoker in a tree stand won't see any deer.
