Quick question

My dad has been fishing for about a year with a spinning reel for a year now. He’s pretty used to it but he’s still a beginner. He wants a new combo and I was wondering if it’s ok to get him a bait caster or if it’s gonna be to hard?

What's his "patience level" ?
New technique, new skills. If you have one, let him try it a couple of times out, of course with some coaching. I don't care for 'em, but have dozens of spinning combos, so I might not be your best source of advice.

Get him a gift card and let him pick his own combo. Take him to his favorite store and check them out together.

If you have or could borrow a baitcaster, let him try it. You can do this in the back yard, park, etc. Make he also tries backcasting. You can a lot of money and frustration.

dougk is right, let him try one first, if it works don't fix it, meaning the Spinning outfit !

Maybe just go ahead on and ask him if he feels "ambidextrous" or not. I used the right hand crank on the Zebco as a wee child, then got a Mitchell spinning rig for Christmas, at about 13 years old... Once I got "the hang of" the left-handed reeling, I was never too eager to be using the right hand crank.

I bought a baitcaster with some hesitation and quickly remembered why I use spinning gear exclusively. It is sitting in the corner of my garage with the second backlash still on it right next to my golf clubs from not being able to correct a hook. As somebody mentioned, if he has patience...... and the "touch" ....maybe. More expensive reels have more anti-backlash characteristics but my abilities for pro-backlash are superior than their anti characteristics. So I look at my spinning gear and know I can use it in my sleep, I look at the baitcaster and ask myself do I really want to hate myself? I know many people use them without issue, just not me.
