Nevada Out Of State License Is Needed For Topaz Lake Outflow...We Didn't Know That For Five Years

Topaz Lake straddles the California Nevada border, we had been told that if you have a California license you could fish the lake without having to get a Nevada out of state license.

Okay, so one of our favorite places to fish is the outflow that flows into a canal, this is on the Nevada side. We fished this for five years without having Nevada licenses, apparently we dodged a huge bullet on that one.

We get there one year late in the afternoon, maybe an hour or so light left, and there is this huge sign saying that the outflow and canal is on Nevada land, and licenses are required and failure to have one will result in prosecution. We were thinking if we went and got licenses there wouldn't be any fishing time left, so we'd fish and get licenses when we went back to the hotel there at Topaz.

So we're fishing, I look up and on the cliff above my wife I see two law enforcement hats coming into view, I quickly put my rod against the concrete, and told the guy fishing by my wife the two German Browns on the stringer were now his...and said Jeanne, put your pole down against the cliff. She says no, I'm fishing, I wanted to yell at her dammit stop giving me lip service and put your frigging pole down. The guy next to her got it and told her there were wardens up above where they couldn't see them.

So after watching awhile they left, the guys said that one warden typically showed up twice a day. We bought licenses on the way out, and the very next day actually had to show them to wardens. Now we allow time to get the licenses before fishing, apparently this is a fairly expensive violation, not worth messing with. A three day license costs as much as the California two rod one does.

Nevada has a special fishing license for non residents to fish only TOPAZ lake AND tributaries, including the CANAL. It's called the Nevada Interstate Boundary License. It's $31 for a year, and it allows a non resident to fish the TOPAZ CANAL ONLY in addition to TOPAZ LAKE without having to buy the regular non resident license at $80. It's something fairly new. Not sure if it allows you to fish Lake Tahoe tribs...

Fished Topaz 2 weeks ago. One day we caught limits of trout. The next day the wind came up (45mph) and chased us off after an hour. Last I heard 3 days ago was the lake level is coming up and the fishing is 'good'.

I don't have a boat either. Fish the southwest side (there are jeep trails to the water in places, but don't take a car down them). If you don't have a truck, park on top and walk down. Or try the north side (the paved road is just north of the casinos). You can park along that road and walk down. If you keep going on that road, you'll get to the RV campground too. Use a light line and leader, sliding sinker and a size 10 or 12 bait hook. Try the standard Pautzke's, Power Bait, Micetails, Worms. Cast long and short, you never know whether the fish will be close to shore or out a ways. The Topaz Lodge has a nice coffee shop if your granddaughter gets hungry! Good Luck!!
