Hello everyone I hope your lines are staying tight and your freezers full of fish. My name is Manny and I fish the waters along the north to central east coast of Florida catching red/black drum, snook, and sheepshead to name a few. I’ve primarily used spinning reels for the last 15 years, but I recently purchased a Penn Squall 50LD reel for a charter boat trip in a few weeks. I have seen some people use big reels like the 50LD for casting on piers, I was wondering if you fine folks have any recommendations for rods to pair with this behemoth of a reel? Occasionally I would take it out on a boat but I would like to use it to cast further out on a pier or when I surf cast.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Welcome to the Forum, Manny. It is definitely is not a reel that I would use on the pier or the beach. It would be very similar to putting a 16# shot put and I will probably be able to throw it just as far. (MHO)

Welcome Manny, but I’m not able to answer your question. Sure there will be others soon with more knowledge than me.

That's a good size reel, i wouldn't use it anywhere other than on a boat, so i have no idea what you can put that on to cast it, sorry

Hey, welcome Manny. Sorry, don't know squat about those big reels. All I know is that I use the lightest stuff I can and preserve what energy I have left.

A 50LD will hold 1050yds of 50lb braid. That's a small -medium Tuna sized reel. You could lob baits off a pier with it but its not a casting reel. And unless you're an EXCELLENT baitcaster, you are asking for the Mother of all backlashes. I'd recommend a reel half that size,at the most for pier or surf, and only if you're a skilled baitcaster. If not,a large spinning reel is probably a better choice, maybe 4000-6000 size.
Check with Flytier or Lee if you want a second opinion, they're more surf guys than I am.
