Panama City Beach Surf Fishing

Heading down to PCB next week for a little surf fishing and I’m wondering if anyone is getting any bites down there? First time fishing down there so any tips would be greatly welcomed. I’ve heard it can be quite challenging in December and especially when the temps are as low as they are there right now. I’m taking with me some pompano rigs, and hope to have a little spoon action off the jetty at some point.

Welcome to the Forum Jim, Fishing slows down on the Coast in the Winter, but December is better than Jan.., or Feb. Good Luck!

I live 10 minutes door to shore at PCB. Reds and pomps are still running. Temps have been cold for a few days. Red flag and a couple double red flag a few days but otherwise terrific! Bring wind proof clothing and a few sweatshirts and sweatpants and have a wonderful time!

Thanks for the info! Mission was successful! I came to catch a Pompano, didn’t have high hopes because of the temps. Going home a happy man! Cheers

I just ran into a new YouTuber out of Predido Kay which is as far west as you can go in Florida. It about 2.5 hours east of Panama City Beach but the techniques will be the same in both places. It will be interesting to see how his channel grows over time.

For the past 4 years I have spent 3-4 months right on the beach in PCB. I have watched surf fishermen daily and can say I've seen only 4 or 5 fish caught the entire time. One guy caught a sand shark, two caught skates, and one caught a small bluefish, and the other caught a small flounder. I have seen several methods: one guy used a remote control boat to take the line way out past the second set of breakers. He caught nothing. One guy used a kayak to paddle out and drop his line; he caught nothing. The guys who just threw it out as far as they could caught the fish. Moral of the story: winter is not a productive time for surf fishing. But it's fun to enjoy the sun, drink some beer, and entertain the possibility of something biting your bait. And forget about the high tech tricks.

Lessons in surf fishing might help. I have fished near Noel Kuhn and Chip Brundage and they catch fish!
Here is what I've learned from them.
