Cant catch fish

I am a 71 year old fisherman from New Mexico.I go through sperts of catching an occasional fish(lakes or streams)
in what I consider good fishing spots(areas)in my part of the state(South West)New Mexico.I live on a limited income but I believe
my equipment is good ,Rods,reels,line.My expertise is marginal to say the least.I enjoy just 'being out' there trying.
Perhaps its the wrong technic at the wrong time,,,?I'm always willing to learn...!
After3 or 4 hours of a 'bite or two' I usually quit,and hope the next time things will change...

Wow I am from New Mexico as well , Roswell born and raised, used to fish the pecos as a Catfisherman now living on the boston harbor all of my fishing techniques are useless , everything i know i wrong lol.
