I get to be every year a part of the Maumee River Run. The limit is 4 Walleyes and over 15" in order to keep it. It is common to catch fish between 6 and 10 lbs. No snagging, snagged fish must go back. My biggest Walleye is a legal 12.7 lb. fish, I've caught both large and smallmouth, steelhead, carp and various other species. I use a floating jighead on a weighted leader. You are less likely to snag a fish with a floating jighead. When I leave the water in my waders any eggs or milt, I mix together before I put it back in the water hopefully to hatch.

Hey Ohio: You are a credit for your stewardship to the Maumee walleyes. At 82, I have fished from Ashtabula to the Western Basin, skippering mainly out of Marblehead. Capt Pete, OSU 1963

Welcome to the Forum, "Fishing Ohio for Monsters" I haven't completely figured out how to use it yet but I'm trying. The Forum has some informative information on it and some interesting information on it. I know that I enjoy flipping through it. Have a good day!

I hope to get to Maumee for the first time this year. Any other tips you can share? I have never caught a walleye and that is definitely on my bucket list for this fishing season.

First off you want floating jig heads, twisters in chartruese, green, white. I use a medium power rod and spinning tackle and 10 lb. test. Depending on what side of the river you are, throw jig to right and just let it bounce you will feel when they pick it up. Fighting a fish in the current makes them feel like monsters. I also forgot to tell you that you need to find a split shot for what height the river is., put it 16" from your floating jig head. When the water is low you want about a 16th ounce jig head. When the water is high find the biggest split shot you can find. You can tend to lose jigs but not as much as a weight on the jig. Weighted jig heads.....you lose alot cause they are on the bottom where all the rocks are. Floating jig heads never reach the rocks, the split shot will, but not the jig.

Were you a charter boat captain or own your own boat? I know you must of caught thousands of perch and walleye. Both great eating fish. My true love is fishing and trying to out smart Largemouth bass.

Joyrider, you also would want some waders to go in the water with thousand of other anglers. Someone in line could help you with any questions you may have. Remember no snagging, fish have to be 15" or bigger, can only be caught in the mouth. Only 1 hook is allowed until May 1, by then the white bass are in full force.
Enjoy your Maumee River water experience. Oh and 2 last things. You can only fish from sunrise to sunset. And your inside hook diameter can only be 1/4". Have fun, enjoy yourself and be advised, Game Wardens are everywhere and when someone is in violation, they come out of the woodwork.
