I’ve never used skipjack and not sure we have them around here. I know they catch lots of blues and some flatties on them. I use bluegills that I catch or go buy if I’m I a hurry. My biggest was caught on a small piece of chicken liver on a small hook I use to catch bluegills on 8# line that should have been replaced 3 years before I was using it. I was using a browning boron 5’8” pistol grip rod with my dads Shimano bantom reel. Took 20 minutes to land it. The line broke right at the bank. I just reached down and picked it up. It was 2:00 am. It was barely hooked in the lip!

The adrenaline that a catch/save like that should have lasted for hours. The big guy was smiling down on you for that.

Doitright: Large Catfish got that way by eating what is most avaiable in their home water. They could care less about what is available elsewhere. In most of the south, as far as I know there are a lot of sunfish, or perch. That is argueably the number one food source when they grow to a large size. They may have dined on crawfish and minnows earleir, but when they are massive size they want high nutricious meals that are easy to find and eat. Just Sayin....RJS

That story I just posted a bit ago was not weighed but it had to be 40 plus pounds. Quite a bit bigger than the 35.12 pounder my grandson caught two years ago.

I’m giving away an old Ohio secret here but you guys here all love the sport of fishing so here goes. Take a pound of skin on hot dogs. Cut them in 1 to 2 inch chunks. Take a regular package of strawberry jello. Put hot dogs wet from their package and cut in chunks in a zip lock bag. Add the package of strawberry jello to the hot dogs. Zip the bag and shake it until The chucks are very well blended With jello powder. Refrigerate overnight.
Hook a big hunk of the red And now very dense Hot dog and hook it up with whatever kind of rig you usually use. Hang on! I know of fisherman getting 25 cats in an outing. They can’t resist this bait. Good luck guys go get em.

Somebody let that secret out years ago. I have Bar S wennies that have been cut up & soaking in strawberry jello & minced garlic for 7 months. Not unusual for me as I've used them that had been curing for over a year. I've experimented using only jello then only garlic but settled on the jello garlic mix. Just jello wennies catch almost all channel cat & few blue's. Adding the garlic up's the number of bluecat hitting the bait. i only use the wennies if i can't get larger bluegills. using larger bluegills l catch almost no channel cat only bluecat & flathead. I don't want channel cat. That's what works for me in my home lake but a different lake could be a whole different story. Tight lines.

I have found adding the garlic keeps the flatheads away. Jello only; makes for great catches of both flatheads and yellow belly bullheads. Both fillet and eat very good. Have had people suggest all king of additives from garlic to sardine juice to dill to chopped onions. Stick with good ol jello & dogs. Best bait I ever used. Easy as a quick run to a store and only takes 12 hrs to marinate and your off to a great fishing trip.

I found another use for those marinated red garlic wennies. I can cut a piece about 1/4 inch thick & 1/2 inch or so long then put it on a 1/16 oz jig head & it will catch bluegills & crappie. It just might be as good as a worm. But, i've never caught a flathead on a marinated wennie. It might just be my lake. If I use creek clubs I will catch an occasional bass. Another bait that catches channel cat is catfish skin. Well, a channel cat will eat anything, even soap. Good luck, catch a biggen.

Will have to try for gills and crappie. 40 years of catching flatheads sure never tried on panfish but will reduce my 2 inch chunks way down and will give it a go for sure!! 🎣.

Same thing in ne ohio, excellent bait and easy on the budget. I use that bait to catch channel cats in a couple of different inland lakes. I kayak fish using ul equipment targeting panfish, panfish ='s bluegill (brim), crappie, perch. I bring the strawberry hotdogs with me every now and then and go for catfish, actually I'm trying for bullhead. I keep catching 13" to 13 1/2" bullhead and I need a 14" bullhead for my 4th fish ohio.

Anyway I fish in the morning hours and keep the smaller catfish (25" or less) for eating. Typical catfish that I keep next to ne ohio yellow perch.

If you can get a carp and cut it up into chunks it’s an awesome bullhead bait.

Flat Heads like to hang out at the bottom of a ledge. I fish for them on a gradual drop off that goes from
10 feet to 39 feet they hang out looking up for blue gills some where on that slope. Use a circle hook and
they will hook themselves. If you get one be sure and fry up some belly meat great texture and taste for sure don't eat it every day. I love it.

The Flatheads on the Mississippi river will jump thru a flaming hoop for a 3 to 5 inch Green eared sunfish !

No perching was slow so I switched over to hotdogs for some catfishing. These hotdogs last a long time made this way just keep the bag sealed in the fridge until used.

Mogadore is producing excellent crappie and some perch are in the mix. Drop shotting off the bottom with minnows or jigs with minnows.
West branch is doing the same, lots of crappie with perch tossed in.
Mosquito lake is the same.

I go to pymatuning for perch and dropshot with crawlers in +/- 12ft of water using a can of tuna for chum. Minnows would do better I just don't want to be bothered with them along with 1 more thing to get tangled in if something big hits.
