The only flathead i've ever caught was with a Hellbender while fishing for striper in lake Texhoma. Was about 40 pounds.

Lonny - If your asking about a bait to try and you were using liver. I've had very good luck using raw thick sliced smoked bacon half pieces. Fishing for saltwater hardhead cats. Somone on the Stage suggested I try it. He was a freshwater cat fisherman.

I watched a guy on YouTube tip his jig with bacon for flounder and done rather well with it

Hey Lonny,
My son, here in Kansas, fishes primarily for Channel cats and uses cut bait ( usually blue gill cut in half). He will catch a few blue gill from wherever he’s fishing and use them. Here’s a picture of some he caught earlier this summer. The “spy” is his daughter, also a very good fisherman as shown in the second pic.

I agree. Chicken livers for channel cats. Bluegills, etc. for flatheads.

Big bluegills are the way to go but the little ones work really well too. Put them on circle hooks#7 for big bluegills and #5 for small ones.

They are best found in rivers, creeks, dams and spillways. Lakes also work. They like brush piles, log jams and deep holes. And like RJS said they bite best at night. Most all of the big cats I’ve caught was after dark.

The best bait for flatheads is live, or cut bait from the same water you're fishing. I fish the Ohio Rivew and try to use Skipjack - usually cut into chunks. If not available, I use Bluegill. The heads seem to work the best

Perhaps you have a relative of Spirit’s skunk. Maybe if you two went fishing together you would both drown your skunks and get a big catch.

I’m giving away an old Ohio secret here but you guys here all love the sport of fishing so here goes. Take a pound of skin on hot dogs. Cut them in 1 to 2 inch chunks. Take a regular package of strawberry jello. Put hot dogs wet from their package and cut in chunks in a zip lock bag. Add the package of strawberry jello to the hot dogs. Zip the bag and shake it until The chucks are very well blended With jello powder. Refrigerate overnight.
Hook a big hunk of the red And now very dense Hot dog and hook it up with whatever kind of rig you usually use. Hang on! I know of fisherman getting 25 cats in an outing. They can’t resist this bait. Good luck guys go get em.

I’ve never used skipjack and not sure we have them around here. I know they catch lots of blues and some flatties on them. I use bluegills that I catch or go buy if I’m I a hurry. My biggest was caught on a small piece of chicken liver on a small hook I use to catch bluegills on 8# line that should have been replaced 3 years before I was using it. I was using a browning boron 5’8” pistol grip rod with my dads Shimano bantom reel. Took 20 minutes to land it. The line broke right at the bank. I just reached down and picked it up. It was 2:00 am. It was barely hooked in the lip!
