Sterna, Why’d you leave such a great fishing state as Louisiana? Y’all have it all when it comes to fishing.

The US Army did it the first time. Then a job and woman! Sometimes you just do what you have to do. However, there is some pretty good fishing here in SC. Caught a few bass today.
Yep, Cajuns can understand and speak English, but sometimes they don't choose to! Like where are you catching those fish? and such! Just Sayin...RJS

Down here and probably in Louisiana we call them Grinnell. They fight like hell and the guy who introduced them to me made Grinnell balls out of them full of Cajun spices, then deep fried them. They were a little larger than hush puppies and were delicious. I wish I had his receipe but he passed away a few years ago. They look prehistoric to me. I did not know they eat bass roe. Thanks for the different history on them.

Hack, I've caught them in shallow bays in Lake Fork, but not often. Never tried to choke one down. Just haven't been that hungry. Never heard them called anything but bowfin.
They more or less fall into the same general category as alligator gar. Folks who like gar eat bowfin. Just Syin...RJS
Both gar and Choupique have a lot of bones in them. All the people I knew in Louisiana that ate them removed the bones made fish balls out of them.
Had a shipmate a while ago from Loosian who claimed he was a coonass. I was not familiar with that term, so I got an education. He's the one taught me to make a roux and the basics of gumbo. And a number of other things. He's also the one introduced me to Jimmy Rogers. The yodeling one.

You had a good shipmate for sure! LOL on the good lesson learned!
Spirit27: If you had a friend and shipmate who was a genuine coon ass, you had a winner. He knows things and can do things the rest of us find amazing. That's why New Orleans is so popular for dining wonders. Just Sayin...RJS
Well I have since learned that the term can be difficult to define. To refer to oneself as a coonass, one must first be a Cajun. And then one must have a certain attitude about that fact. And to be a "genuine" coonass you must take pride in the fact that you were raised up hard scrap and dirt poor. The two of us were good friends and ready to go to war for each other. Of course, we would rather have not had to. Just Sayin

You’re welcome to look me up if you’re ever in these parts. I’m fluent in English so there’s no worries there. I’m pretty sure I can understand you. If not we both speak fishing.
Thanks. It’s not that far. About 6 hrs. I’m pretty sure we’ll understand each other. If I catch something, just don’t yell “choot ‘em, choot ‘em”. 😁

I have caught many. They fight hard, but are a pain in the butt when Bass or Pike fishing. They tear up your soft plastics or spinner baits. They also are extra slimy.
