Fredfish,
Down south they’re called bowfin, grindles, mud fish & several other names such as cypress trout. Scientific name is Amia calva. They aren’t considered invasive as for as I know. They are “living” dinosaurs. Down here we use yellow or white spinner baits such as the snag less Sally. I’ve also caught them on buzz baits. They are a riot to catch but have a an arsenal of baits because they are rough on baits. They’re pretty good to eat fresh out of the frying pan but ooze oil when you let them get cold. They’ve been around for literally eons.

Yeah John they are native down south, but were never up here till the 70s as far as I know. Back then the old timers told everyone to kill them if you caught one.

I think that’s a bow fin. I’ve never caught one or eaten any but I’ll bet it’s as good as any catfish. It’s also referred to as a mud fish so maybe not. They’re meat eaters. Small fish, snails, clams, crayfish, etc... googled the diet 🥴

Bowfin. Great fighters. Fun to catch. Never tried eating one but that’s cause we had plenty of walleyes, perch, bluegill whitebass and northerns in Wi. In Wi we called them dog fish.

Correct Catfish. Here’s all the names they are called depending on where they are.

Bowfin (Amia calva) are bony fish related to gars in the infraclass Holostei. Common names include mudfish, mud pike, dogfish, griddle, grinnel, swamp trout, and Choupique.

Found in: Lake Winnipesaukee, Leech Lake, Gun Lake, Ross R Barnett Reservoir, Lake Michigan, Lake Minnetonka, Lake Simcoe, Lake Talquin, Lake Wylie. They are found down here too.

I’ve eaten them made into grinnel balls and deep fried. They were delicious. If you ever catch one, skin it and look up a recipe for frying them.

Definitely a Bowfin. They will hit just about anything, worms, minnows, lures. Most states consider them a trash fish. They actually let them get weighed in on a big tournament in Vermont, The Lake Champlain International Fathers
Day Tournament.

Fisherman’s, That’s a nice Grinnel, which is what I know them by. Here’s more names for them: Bowfin (Amia calva) are bony fish related to gars in the infraclass Holostei. Common names include mudfish, mud pike, dogfish, griddle, grinnel, swamp trout, and choupique.
You’re missing out on a great eating fish. I love them deep fried, made into balls like a hush puppie, only larger.

They are a blast to catch Rayz. That sounds like a good Fathers Day contest. Other names are: Bowfin (Amia calva) are bony fish related to gars in the infraclass Holostei. Common names include mudfish, mud pike, dogfish, griddle, grinnel, swamp trout, and choupique.

Definitely a Bowfin! I've caught plenty on Florida's Harris Chain of Lakes while fishing for bass. Caught a 16 pounder right off my dock and wow did it fight hard!! Thought it might be a Florida record size Bowfin, so, filled a 50 gal garbage can with water, put the fish in it and looked up record Bowfin. And, it was 3 lb shy... Record was 19 lb. Most of the time we kill them, but I put this back in the water so he could grow up🤣!!

I’ll bet that was a hell of a fight FM. Let ‘em grow sounds good. When we were fishing for them we were fishing in a bayou and after they took the spinner bait we’d run back and forth, up and down the bayou. Sometimes they got off, but when we landed them we were very careful when we picked them up. They’ve got a pretty good set of teeth. And you better tie them to something heavy or they get loose. I think it’s a great sport fish.

NY wants you to remove any you catch in the St. Lawrence river. I have never eaten one, and probably never will, but have had lots of baits destroyed by them.

Bowfin or Dogfish. They are very beneficial to help keep carp in check. The eat carp spawn and slow down this invasive species. Please release them after catching.

Years ago, before I-10 was completed between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, drivers would have to depart the interstate section and drive on the older highway for stretches, and these often were bordered by bayous where often people would be fishing.

Once i was one of the switch overs, had to stop for a traffic light and there was an elderly black woman fishing in the bayou beside the road, seated on a folding chair and using a long cane pole. She suddenly got a bite, and upon hooking this bowfin, or grinnell, she jerked it so hard the fish flew up in the air and in an arc over her head by at least 10 feet, and then lands as far back on the bank as it had been in the water in front of her. I almost died laughing, honked my horn and gave her a "thumbs up" sign. That bowfin never knew what hit it. Just Sayin...RJS

Another Awesome story Robert. A sight for sore eyes for sure. She knew exactly what she was doing.😂 Highway 90, which is still there and the easiest way to get to Liberty.
