Welcome John, the ugly stick G2x is a good beginner set up. Comes with rod and reel. There not expensive either.

Welcome to the Stage. Hard to beat an Ugly Stik paired with a Pflueger President reel. Those will set you back $90-100 together. As for the size, that depends on what you are after.
