I’ve been trying at carp for the past 4-5 months. Every 2 to 3 weeks I would try for them. I have a method feeder, tried to use a hair rig, tried the panko jello mix, and the oatmeal one. All I have gotten is a turtle. Any good methods or rigs that don’t cost a bunch of money and I don’t have to import from Europe?

They have very good eyesight. You could easily be spooning them out of feeding, be stealthy and use corn. If you can put a few rods out with corn to cover more water.

I've never eaten it, but I have eaten bass. How bad could it be? I saw an episode of DDD with Guy Fieri on the Food Channel and he went to this place in Nebraska where the house special was deep fried carp and folks were coming from all over to get some. Fieri was very surprised by how good it tasted as he'd always heard the same stories. And they do fight.

The only freshwater fish I eat are walleye, perch, bullhead, channel cats, and salmon. I have tried some others, bass, crappie, trout, and who knows what else, but I don't think so.

Carp fishing is peaceful. Lay it on the bottom and wait. As far as awful eating that’s probably a rumor started by a guy who didn’t want any competition at his pond. Never ate one myself but i had a guy who I’d give them to.
I don’t eat any freshwater fish. Not my religion just too many PCBS and mercury in them where I live.

First time Carp Fishing European Style with Lawless Fishing;


Lawless Fishing was nice enough to show me the ways of carping. The way he does his carping came from Europe. Hopefully in the future (if you guys want to see more carping) i will walk you through some of this setup. But it's amazing that most of my carp ever landed before this trip were from rattle traps LOL!!! you get the idea!

Fall Carping at Audubon Lake (Haddon Heights, NJ)

I went fishing with my friend Steve OT at Audubon Lake, Haddon Heights, NJ. This is one of my prime Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) spots for late Fall and Winter time, since I know that the fish are always swimming around that area in search of food. This is a 24 minutes video, but the interesting parts are as it follows:

0:00 - 1:30 : I start the video and give a brief introduction of the place, until I get a bite at 0:41. I don't recommend watching from 1:30 to 3:20, since you will be looking only at the sky and the trees! Heh. I have no where to place my camera, so it flipped upwards while I was trying to land the fish.

3:20 - 5:25 : You can actually see the fish in this portion of the video, and how I do a quick measurement and CPR it -- Catch, Photo, Release. The fish got all dirty from being outside of the net, so it lost a bit of its slime coat. I felt so bad about it that I measured it really quick and just released it without taking a photo of it.

Also, notice that I only weight small Carp with the digital scale through its Operculum. The reason is simple: for bigger Carps, the scale may rupture the Carp's Operculum due to the force of gravity. Therefore, for bigger Carp, I usually measure the fish inside my Balzer net. In other words, I measure the fish together with my Balzer net, and then I subtract the mass of the net alone. That gives a good estimate of the weight without hurting bigger fish. The fish above measured 6.2lbs on the scale.

8:30 - 12:30 : I usually don't do instructional talks on my videos because most of the fishing knowledge is out there in fishing Magazines or just on the Internet. I hope you realized that. However, I decided to give a couple tips on late Fall fishing during this portion of the video. Summarizing:

-- Choose a good spot. In other words, somewhere with fish nearby. Throw your best presentation in front of their faces, and the odds of landing a fish will be better.

-- Choose a good time. Fish will feed for shorter periods of time as water temperatures drop. You have two alternatives: go to your good spot during the time that they are most likely to feed, or, if you don't know what is the best time, just stay outside for a long period of time and record your catches in relationship to time. It's very likely that most Species will still feed during D&D -- not Dungeon and Dragons, okay? Dawn and Dusk!

-- Chum your spot. Chumming is a key technique for when fishing gets super slow! Fish are encouraged to feed when they see good amounts of food, even if they are not supposed to. They are truly opportunists; therefore, get some of your bait in the water before the beginning of your fishing session.

Also, please, make sure that you are not chumming your local body of water with anything that may increase the likelihood of the introduction of invasive Species. And, finally, chum a good amount of bait, but never too much! If you chum too much, the fish will get full even before it gets to your hook. Remember: their metabolism slows down as water temperatures go down; therefore, they eat less.

Well, Hoss. I have recently read here on the Forum that someone had success catching carp by using peanut butter and bread. They had used just peanut butter but also said with bread seemed to work better. So there is some unproven suggestions about carp bait. Since it doesn't cost much and probably what you already have in your pantry, give it a try. Just Sayin...RJS
