Hi everyone! Cindy here in San Dego. I have lived in San Diego since 2006 and have not had a chance to fish seriously until now. One of possitives of social distancing and this pandemic. I love to salt water fish and I am curious about the bays and if I am allowed to fish in places like Mission Bay and Crown Point. I, Curious also about what fish are biting this time of year? I was an avid fisherwoman in NJ and in Colorado and so looking forward to finally get some serious fishing in

Hi and welcome to FS.
You can fish anywhere in both of the bays. Boat docks where the yachts tie up too are off limits for fishing I believe, private property. Also military controlled areas are off limits.
For the most part in the bays will be spotted bass, 14 inches to be legal to keep. Halibut live in both bays. Summer time the bonito, barracudas, and mackerel show up. Mackerel usually are there year round. Shark and bat ray fishing Mission Bay seems to be a popular place.
Check out sdfish.com lots of local fishing post there, both fresh and saltwater.

The lounge section is not for the timid. LOL.

If you have a boat your best bet is SD bay south of the Coronado bridge. I caught 40 today, spotted bay bass. All on plastics. Last week 30 the week before 50. The last 5 times there 197 total all catch and release, don't want to eat any out the South Bay too polluted. The water is cleaner in Mission bay plus many areas to shore fish. No so in the South Bay. Larry W.

I used to live in Imperial Beach, a block and a half from the pier. Would walk over to the beach and head north, fish the surf all along the Silver Strand. You never know what you'll catch - rays, sharks, perch, mackerel, corbina and the occasional halibut. Welcome to the stage. Post some pics, we love photos.

I don't use a leader. Tie direct to a 1/4 oz ball head jig debarbed. The last few years I've had best luck using 3 inch Kalens lunker grubs in Rons craw color. I buy them from tackle warehouse on line. I've caught mostly spotted bay bass along with yellow fin croaker, Shortfin corvina, halibut, bonefish, Mackeral, smelt, sand bass, Bonito and some big bat rays. If you want to catch bonefish go out on a low tide and slurp gun some ghost shrimp on the flats to the left of the channel leaving Pepper park launch ramp. Look for the holes in the sand. You could also use a shovel to dig them up. Then turn left towards the L street ramp and fish on the east side of the bay. I've used a drop shot rig or dropper loop rig for the ghost shrimp. I have my best luck fishing the east side of the bay between the car freighter dock and the bridge staying out of the deep channel, fishing in 12 ft to 18 ft of water. Sometimes I fish by the island over by the silver strand and the Navy base. It says to keep out but Have never been run out of there. Cast towards the island. The island is hard to see until you are close, look for the warning sign towers in the water. Last time out in Nov. I only caught 12 spotties by the 2 carriers on the east side just past the car dock. Hope this info helps. Larry W.

I forget to mention that there is a limit on ghost shrimp, so google them and it tells how to get them and limits and how to make or where to buy the guns. Bonefish are fighters!!!

I gave up fishing the lakes 8 years ago. Never been skunked on the bay, 8 was the smallest amount ever. 8 years ago my partner at that time and I caught 176 in about 9 hrs non stop hits and catches. Perfect tide and perfect wind for the drift we were doing. I never anchor. Rental boats are available at Glorietta bay in Coronado. Once this virus is controlled I'll be looking for a new fishing partner as one moved to Yuma and the other went to Florida. The one who moved to Florida and I fished once a week for 2 years straight. I've caught them up,to 36inches on plastic swimbaits, the Rons craw and Big Hammer city shrimp color swimbaits. The best bait for Halibut is live anchovies, but you need a aireiated bait tank and the smallest amount you can buy from the bait barge is 1/2 scoop and its around $ 30 I think. Haven't bought any for 8 years going out to the kelp beds on my friends boat. If you want to have a better chance for Halibut, fish around the sunken jetty coming off of North Island by the mouth of the bay and ballast point. Close to the bait barge. Not far from Shelter Island boat ramp. LW.
