This is the snap off the end of what was supposed to be a 40lb wire leader. Caught a big Northern Pike, let it go, and then saw what the leader looked like.

Use Coast Lock Snap Swivels. I have never lost a fish using them.

I've replaced the snaps with the heavier ones that I normally use, VMC duo locks. I'm not sure why they put a light snap on a fairly heavy wire leader. Oh well, this is how we learn.

That’s pretty cool. Wish you had a pic. But I sorta know how that goes. Never caught a big one just hammer handles.

Can’t underestimate their power, for sure. Too bad you didn’t get a pic of the fish. Love the battle, but they can make a mess of things.

I usually fish by myself, so pics are difficult. I pretty much gave up on trying to do a selfie while trying to hold a big fish. I actually caught a few that would have been pic worthy this time out, the big ones have finally moved into the area that I have been waiting for. Big Northerns are my favorite fish to catch, when you set the hook on one, you just know it immediately.

Those are the ones on the chatterbait. I have two of them that have came apart. One of them on a 17lb fish, and the other was a snag I pulled to get my bait back. Maybe it is the hardness of the wire used?

The snaps on chatter baits take a beating, and not just from fish. I change mine on a regular basis, because the metal of the snaps get fatigued over time and will let loose at the worst possible time. That constant side to side pressure wears them out, even if you can't see it.

Wow. I've used No. 5 or 7 on fish up to 20 lbs. Then larger for trolling for kings, dolphin and tuna. What was the 17 lb. der you lost

No doubt. That's why I target them, and have the scars to prove it. My wife is used to me coming home covered in blood. No matter how careful you are, you're going to get something sharp if you handle enough big ones. I've caught and released hundreds of them, and they still get me every now and then. Worth every battle scar I've ever gotten from them.
