I'm going to Hawaii for two weeks of fishing .No boats all from shore. This is my first trip there, on the big island's south end. Leave the end of October. Any tips, advice, what to take, does and don'ts, whatever. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Been fishing 54 yrs.
Thanks

Fishing on the big island is fun. There is a Walmart there to get all of your supplies needed, or one of the local tackle shops. You can catch all kinds of fish with a bamboo pole, hook, line, split shot lead and some frozen squid. A few months ago my brother and son and I went on a fishing trip there on the north side of the big island. Before the end of the day, the pond that we kept our catch looked like a colorful aquarium. We caught Kumu, Humuhumunukunukuapuaa, Roi, Hinalea, Popaa, Trumpet fish,Alaihi, lots of triggerfish ( all kinds of colors ), Taape, Papio, Moana, mamoand a few other different species. It's a lot of fun with just a simple flinstones rig or light tackle spinner setup. If you want a bigger fight, target the bigger jacks called Papio or the Uluas( jacks larger than 10 lbs.) Look at what the locals are targeting in the area. In the south point area, it is my understanding that they fish for pelagic species like Ono, Mahi Mahi, or Marlin.Sorry for the Hawaiian names of the fishes, you can Google the English names of them. Fun times, good way to reboot your human computer if you know what I mean.Anyway good luck on your vacation, Happy catching!

Forgot to mention Dave if you want to step out of your comfort zone, pick up some Poke as a snack from a mom and pop store in the area. If you don't like it you can feed it to the fish. Poke is raw fish with seaweed, seasalt, and somtimes with other garnishments. If you like it and it is delicious to you, " we say that was broke da mouth ". Hawaii is one of the best places to indulge in fresh raw fish. Start with blackened ahi ( seared ahi on the outside dressed with Cajun spices ) regular ahi sashimi , spicy ahi poke, aku poke for a more daring individual, and wash the flavor a down with your favorite beer.Or if you don't drink alcohol Coca Cola is a good substitute .
