I have a depth /fish finder (Garmin 95) Shows water temp, depth, fish? etc.
But I just cannot figure out how to read the bottom stuff. Dont really understand what I am seeing. Any body have some info on understanding and using the mid grade depth finders? The expensive ones pretty much take a picture for you it seems, but not understanding the bottom structures? bottom makeup? bait fish? on my unit.

Have the same problem with mine. Mainly use it for depth and temp. that's all.
I had this same problem. Couldn't understand why when I read a depth. And watch my jig drop on the screen. When on the screen it looks like it hit bottom but my jig drop another 30'. A standard transducer shoots down bounces back off the first thing it sences giving us an inaccurate under boat bottom.when your over a flat and can see your jig just off bottom a couple inches is because it's flat. I hope that helps
I have found that the more expensive depth finders do not help as much as you my think that they will because no matter how good the depth finder is the best benefit always goes back to the temp and depth that you see on the screen.
I youtube reading sonar videos there are some that explain what you're seeing
Youtube has several videos on the topic. It's probably the best go-to to learn the basics.
Guess I have been googling wrong things... youtube has been a lot of help.
Thanks guys
next I need to start a new topic on the best around $100 range fishfinder for muddy river fishing
