Crank handle on a level wind reel?

I’m right handed and mistakenly ordered a bait cast reel with the handle on the left side. I’ve always used a right handle level wind to cast and switch hands to retrieve. Now I’m wondering if that’s the most practical way of doing it.
Any opinions?

You will adjust to the left-handed reel and after awhile you will wonder why I haven’t always ordered left hand reels. Some fisherman tend to think 🤔 that it’s difficult to reel in with the left hand but after a short period of time they find out that it isn’t a issue.

Makes sense using the strong hand to grasp the rod and weak hand to crank... 🤔

I agree with the prior comments. In fact, I will go further. All you right hand only fishermen, you are handicapped! When I was in my 20's and had always cast right handed, cranked right, and hadn't thought anything about changing, I was throwing a practice plug with a bait casting reel, and a friend said,"Bob, aren't you left handed?" I said, "Yes, but only when I write, not anything else!" He then suggested I try casting left handed, which to my surprise I was much more accurate. While I can still cast further right, I am more accurate left! So it is highly beneficial being ambidextrous. If I am seated in the boat with another fisherman on my right, no problem. If on the left, no problem. Also, around structure, sometime it isn't handy to cast with my right hand. The same goes for crank handles, it doesn't matter to me.

Also, when bass fishing and the bigg'un hits just as your lure hits the water, if you are casting left handed you are able to both set the hook and crank immediately, rather than having to change hands giving the monster time to throw the hook. Try it, you might discover new skills! RJS

That's why I cast right handed and reel left handed. It's just easier. We do it with spinnin gear, why not bait casters?

Thanks for the input JRS. I posed the same question to my British fishing fanatic friend and he said they all use left hand cranks over there. Of course he also said Yankees are nuts- we haven’t even learned how to use a fork and knife properly.🙂

They're one to talk. Like all them fellers that wear their ball caps backwards, Brits don't even know how to hold a fork.

Ok Saw,you can go fishing with me. I've watched so many people lose big lake trout by exactly what's being talked about. Or any fish for that matter.that few seconds it takes to swap hands while your falling over trying to keep the line tight us the difference between a skunk and a thirty pounder.

Saw I’m exactly the same. I use baitcasters with crank on left side of reel. I’m right handed and can snap the baitcaster back into retrieve mode as soon as I want to. The reel I still have and used for years is Abu Garcia 5501. Most of use know what the 1 means. I agree we us spinning like that why do this dorky gotta switch hands on every cast twice by the way. Once to cast and again to reel. Thumb on line the whole time during cast.

Well I cast right and reel right, but I don't wait until my lure hits the water! I quickly change hands during the cast and two seconds is SLOW. I am making long casts not short casts. It doesn't handicap me having my left hand/arm as a rod holder. I also want my right hand which is more "Athletic" than the left to reel and net while holding my rod with my dumb left hand. I guess I am the only one who does it or will admit it. LMAO

My point exactly. It's only common sense to fish the same way with either kind of reel.
