Power Pro. If water is clear, use a fluoro leader.

20-30lb braid to 12-15lb mono or fluorocarbon leader about a 18 -24 year inch leader

N.Fl bassman: Well, Hoss, you are fortunate to have the line choices and the quality that are available today. When I started in the middle, late 1940's, lines were made of rayon, and similar material and would rot in a season or two. At least they would deteriorate rapidly. Now, the least expensive mono line will last years if properly cared for and stored away from U.V rays.

Each different current material has its own characteristics and properties. I have only recently converted to braided line. Due to its higher strength to size ratio, I have had to rethink just what size to use, rather than strength! If, for instance you have been using 10 lb. mono the same braided line would be much smaller in diameter, causing problems with impossible backlashes. Following this logic, you will be pulling stumps off the lake or creek bottom with braided line before it will break as does mono when you choose to have a larger diameter braided line. And as a suggestion, get a pair of scissor so you will be able to cut the braided line which is much tougher than mono. Who knows, in the future we may not use line at all, but through electronics just command the fish which the computer has selected to jump in the boat! RJS

Use electronics to tell fish to get in my sink from my couch. You can do it with groceries already. Pick which type and where you want it from. RJS. Adding electronic devices to command fish takes half the fun away. But be careful what you wish for these days.

What freshwater lakes are you fishing in San Diego? And what are you fishing for? And please update your profile with your location so you don't have to tell us where you're at every time you post? There are a few people on here from San Diego and most of them will encourage you to hit the salt.

Hello
I started using braided line after I landed a huge 70lbs blue cat on 14 lbs mono!!!
It almost took a hour to reel in!!
It was the biggest blue I’ve ever caught!! matter of fact the biggest catfish I ever caught!! I would highly recommend braided for sure!! You never know what is lurking in the water!!
Keep on fishing y’all

Ok,70 lbs on 14 lb mono. This is not helping the braid argument Scotty. Then theres this, tie the braid to the spool then tape it. Spool it on then tie a leader to that. Then tie the leader to whatever. Then you discover, the fish can see it and also hear it coming. This just doesn’t compute with me.

I use power pro line and fire line mostly 10lb test with a flourocarbon or other clear leader up to 30”. I have at least 6 spinning rods light-medium to medium 7’ outfits set up. I fish Mainly NW pa all year long. Winter time with live bait my leader is 20lb test. I catch large walleye, pike , smallmouth bass and occasional musky. No problems. The 10lb test braid is very difficult to break and lasts for a couple years then I reverse it on my reels to extend use for couple more years. And I fish a lot in all types of weather rivers and lakes including Lake Erie.

I get it imjac I really do but I just don’t see what all the fuss is about when talking braid. Couldn’t you do just as well with the right mono year round in the great state of PA?

The biggest difference between braid andmono is in the diameter of the line for water I'llresistance and in the fact that mono has a Tennessee to have a lot of stretch which makes detecting strikes a lot more difficult.

Now days Braid is so much better than Mono, IMO. I can put 20 LB Braid and cast as far as if I was using 10 LB Mono on the same rod and Reel combo. I use 20-40 LB Braid Surf fishing with Wire Leaders, not Flourocarbon. Not sure I trust heavy Mono/Flourocarbon for Leaders for fish with really sharp teeth. But that is just me.
