Big Dog was a Coastie. Or is it like Marines - once a coastie always a coastie? I mentioned Enewetok which is right out there with Kwajalein. There was a LORAN station there. Those guys had all the xxx rated videos. This was in 1977 so they had some pretty sophisticated equipment for those days. I believe they were on betamax. Used to fish for blues down at NAS Pax River. We smoked them and they were pretty good. All that oil kept them moist.

Yup, Kwajalein,Enewetok, I remember the neighborhood well.
And yeah, smoked bluefish is bearable, just not too often.

I don't think there's any doubt - farm laborers relieving themselves in the lettuce fields.

Could also be birds, animals or bargain basement fertilizer of dubious origin. There was an awful lot of lettuce affected for a few laborers to defecate on.

Hey nobody said they're not fun to catch. Kinda like carp. Carp can give you all you can handle. Just not going in my mouth, although I've heard that if you know what you're doing they can be pretty tasty.

yeah I aint eatin no carp either lol but I sure wish I could find a place close to catch some bigguns

Yeah, the first I ever heard of a tilapia was in a sci-fi novel I reading the 70's...an apocalyptic tale involving voracious man-eater hybrids (bred with piranha? can't recall..)....been wary of those fish ever since and I have seen that show, myself.
'Bout the same filth as the Iowa Beef Packers plant in Emporia, KS that I had a very short stint at, back in the summer of 1969...... I was on the cleaning crew.... you start in the "killing room".....worst job I ever had.... period....and I once worked as a "Pest Controller", the exterminator guy ( gross and kinda dirty, but at least I didn't want to throw up during the whole shift !)
Yeah, the first I ever heard of a tilapia was in a... (show quote)

I could smell IBP every time I drove past Emporia on I-35. YUK!!

Saw a “Dirty Jobs” episode once with Mike Rowe that showed how Tilapia were “Farm raised” - disgusting! They eat they’re own excrement in filthy cement ponds.
I’ll NEVER eat one in a Restaurant after watching that show!
Hopefully the Wild fish taste better, but I’ll still pass!

I saw that same show. After learning how they are raised, I thought about all the times I had eaten those nasty fish. Since then I tell my friends, Yes I have friends, about it before they order. Some don’t care, some do do.

Ya got that right Big dog. I don’t know if they are a type of fishing fish, but I still wouldn’t eat it. I wonder if everyone who has eaten them and found out what they eat while being raised, what they would think? A 💩 a day sure keeps me away.

Talapia are farm raised in the US by Purina Mills formally Ralston Purina Co. They are grain fed and served by most US restaurants as is chicken and catfish.

As long as theres a demand for seafood and suppliers cant just pass a net thru the ocean and cherry pick what they want, and since all fish stocks are in rapid decline in all the waters of the world, the choice of fish at the market is what it is and will be. Might actually find out sooner than later that other subsitutes will be filling in...wont say what as some will definitely lose their stomach contents before bed time.

Mankind is on a journey to knowledge. Unfortunately many must perish along the journey, but with luck, and a LOT OF BLESSINGS, we may learn how to use this planet like the garden it could be.

For twenty-some-odd years, my workplace chartered an 80' boat out of Belmar NJ 3x/yr (June, Aug & Oct) for inshore species, usually Blues, Fluke/sea bass and in the fall, False Albies and the occasional Bonito.

The big Blues are very oily, however, we'd cut out their cheeks about the size of sea scallops & were very tasty! Fluke & the sea bass is always delicious. False Albies (fun to catch), were red-meated catfood - ugh. The Bonito were spectacular on light SW tackle & delicious. I miss those trips.

Next time you get a blue over Taylor size, fillet it and soak the meat over night in the fridge in a dish of milk. Then bake it. Comes out nice and white and light and surprisingly delicious!
As for Tilapia, forget farm raised. Wild however breaded and baked or pan fried with lemon juice is second to none for taste. They are not however high in nutritional value compared to other fish: just very tasty. Best way to catch them, as they are vegetarian mostly, is with a small lure on their spawning beds. They aggressively pick up anything foreign and carry it off. Have had good luck using bread and worms as well out of spawning season.

In our restaurants as far as seafood and catfish are concerned country of origin is posted and state inspected at very high standards. Not mandatory so if its not posted, move on. Simple! Our chicken speaks for itself. Sanderson farms,a local business feeding feeding the country.
